Exhaust cut-out

Have any of you guys used an exhaust cut out on your max? It seemes like a nice way to pick up some hp, and will help at the track.

Check it out http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2446607914

I wanna get it but i dont wanna have problems with exhaust leaks when its closed. let me kno what u guys think...or if u have one how do u like it?

that's cute....this almost beats the tornado supercharger..............almost......

sarcasm aside, don't get that. complete waste and i would imagine it become more of a nuisance than anything. best way is to expand your pipes. that creates more airflow. tha'ts like saying let's remove the exhaust all together. crazy, right? same thing as this...

you guys.... whatever - i have one on my car - why waste your money on the cat back, muffler, and install - with a cut out your basically elimnating a need for any of that - besides a y pipe - not to mention if you are on a budget ( like me a college student ) this would be perfect - my friend gave me his for free and it cost 20 bucks to weld it on - not to mention anytime you want to bolt it up it sounds 100% stock - you bolt the flange back on and the airflow goes through your resonator... muffler.. whatever - unbolt it and it takes the cut out's path and bypasses your stock exhaust cut out - anyways with my cut out and intake i dyno'd +11 whp from stock - and what do you think they have been putting on all muscle cars - anybody with Cobra's TransAm's any v8 will tell you a cut out is legit.

hes right, my friend with a 03 cobra has a cut out, helps him get a few more hp, even though i doubt he needs it considering he has almost 700hp now.

thanks, my buddy with a blown LS1 TransAm that is pushing about as much RWHP as that 03 is using cut outs - he likes them better than his previous cat back, with his old cat back he used to scream all over the place while driving, even at idel thanks to his full exhaust ( headers, track pipes, exhaust, v8 combo ) - now he just opens and closes the flange at will and he doesnt have to be abnoxious around town or the neighbors - also you can opt for an electronic cut out which all you have to do is push a button and it will open and close electronically, so you dont have to get under your car and mess with those wingnuts.

i'll admit, you have me at a loss of words........not that i'd plan on doing this, not my cup of tea, but how's the noise issue on that....intake levels, header levels, exhaust levels???

JCWhitney has these, I believe for significantly less. Check that out. Otherwise, you ever heard a Maxima with an exit immediatly after the y-pipe? Its extremely loud - good sound, but very, very loud. I'd do it if I could weld tho

Man i have one sitting underneath my bed.....from when i had my Z28. Yea, it makes your exhaust note "louder" and sure it give you "some" more HP. But it's cheap! I couldn't/didn't even think about slapping that one on my Maxi. Actually, if anyone wants it???? PM me. I too am a college student, but i'd rather keep my stock exhaust than to make it louder, Maxima's shouldn't be loud........Camaro's yes.

Agreed. Mellow, nice sounding, maybe a snarl? I cant understand how those civics and such can deal with driving a car that is so loud you cant hear yourself think. That's what my Max sounded like when I started it up the other day during my installation of a straight pipe (just open pipe after the y-pipe - nothing hooked up yet). I'd rather deal with less power. Maximas are a classier car than rice rockets and not Camaro like. I dunno, I'm just very against those LOUD rice rockets. I could ramble all day about em. Sorry for gettin off topic

Switchable exhaust cutouts are great. However I wouldnt buy one that is cast iron. That would rust up in a hurry and probably freeze in one of the positions. If you want a good cut out get a SS one with an electronic switch. That way you can wire it right up to your console and whenever anyone revs at you or you take it to the track that extra hp from a truely free breathing exhaust is at the flip of a switch. Really an exhaust cutout is the way to go. Think about it. It will free up more hp/tq than any high flow cat + catback could ever and it is much cheaper than any of that combo too. If you dont like the sound then just flip the switch. Its great for the sleeper look too. Nobody looks under your car. Save money, more hp/tq, and stock sound (in the normal position)... seems like a winner to me.

I gutted my cats once and it was SOOO loud - but cool at the same time - the 3.5 has a weird/mean sound to it - its actually pretty low and sounds very nice and exotic at higher RPMS - i wasted this 3rd Gen z28 and he was like - i like the stock muffler look ( i had my cut out open at the time ) - if you dont want to deal with the sounds - you can always put it right before your stock muffler - my friend has this done on his Cobra and the interior noise is not bad at all.

In the ebay ad...the "free car air freshener with every order" screams to me that this is high quality merchandise...I like the idea though...just not cast iron.

Cable operated design like the one offered on the Ebay might leak, my buddy told me NOT to get the cable operated design because it wont leak - i currently have one that you open and close with the help of a plate and three wing nuts - it seals securely and doesnt even leak at all , and doesnt even have a gasket

This type of setup has been used for years at the track. Pretty much works the same as having open headers (for you V-8 guys). Alot of guys would make their own, but like previously mentioned, I think I would stay away from a cast iron version. Actually, Summit Racing still produces these for Mustangs and Camaros (steel versions however). I'd say if Summit Racing produces a product similar to this, that there must be some benefit by using it.
