My friend just got a deal on a BMW '00 323I w/full options including the HID lights (I love his car) for $31,000. B4 Trade-in of $5k. Wow. He paid about a 1k more than I did for my car. I feel ripped somehow. Anyways, once he breaks-in his car, my Maxima SHOULD be faster than his right? Weight wise his is about 80lbs lighter than my car, but 195-198hp v6 in his car isn't a match right? I already know his great around corners vs my stock '00 Maxima GLE. his came with the sports suspention, while mine is stock.

You will waste him. The 330i is more comp for the Maxima.

the 323i has a 2.5L I-6 engine rated at 170 hp, not 195. You should have no trouble with one.

Well, it is actually 184 HP, and if it is a 5sp you'll be looking for trouble if your's is the Auto tranny. but if it is the Auto 323 you will have no trouble.

I think the 2001 325i is rated at 184 hp. The 2000 323i is rated at 170. I am pretty sure they have the same engine, but different hp ratings.

His is the tiptronic shifter and mine is of course the Auto. He said he is going to get the "chip" fom BMW. He doesn't know how much improvment that will be but the BMW guys said it would give a bit more HP and slightly better gas milage.

tiptronic is essentially the same as an auto. Just shift your auto manually to get the same effect if you want. As for the chip,

starstreak, don't be scared...even with the chip...i was in my parents 2001 toyota avalon w/ 2 friends and i beat a guy in a 323 all by himself...i don't know what kind of tranny he had but it was probably an auto...you should be able to kill him...i think the avalon does 0-60 in the mid 8s and stock auto maxes w/ good drivers (who have a launch technique down) do it in the low 7s...bimmer is probably low 8s...if he has a good launch and you don't, it might be close (only w/ his chip though)

i think a 328i and Max would be a fair match from a standstill, but on the highway im pretty sure the BMW would win. My dad has a 330i auto with the sport package. The other day my brother and I raced on the highway and we were even when i was in second gear. When i shifted into third gear he started walking on me. Previously my dad had a 98 740iL. That car didnt jump very hard off the line, but if you hit it doing highway speeds it would keep up with a lot of cars. I loved waving goodbye to GT's and older Z28's in that car. They would underestimate the car.
