buying a max for christmas..pricing help!

hey everyone,
i already own a max, and I am trying to help my mother in her car purchasing for christmas. she has spotted a 2k max gle and se she likes, and the price range at the dealer to me seems a bit high (15,500 for se, 16,000 for gle). the se doesnt have leather, but has alloy wheels, spoiler, etc.
the gle is the more luxury model. both have over 50k miles...

im thinking we can get either one for 14k out the door, is that reasonable?

IMO, that price is kinda high, i would probably try lookin through classifieds or unless the dealer is offering some really great extend warranty

from a dealer kbb says $15.6 and edmunds says $15.2

for trade-in edmunds lists $11.9, and for private party edmunds lists $13.6 ... I'd offer $13.6 and let them talk you up. So someone traded the car to them for $12k and they're trying to sell it for $15.5? That seems high.

I'd offer $13.5k and see what happens. They will NEVER say "know what, your first offer was too high so how about we lower it and sell you the car for less than your offer?" Make them a reasonable offer and $13.5k seems right. If you want to buy it for $14k don't make that your first offer.

good point with above post. my mother is going to her credit union today, unlike her last car purchase, when she went thru the dealer with the financing.
i told her to get a check for the amount that we agree upon, and not a penny more.

yesterday I went to dealer for some BG 44k, they only charge 17 bucks. Back to the point, I check out some use maxima I saw a loaded mint cont 00 I30t for only $14995 and the 00&01 max they sell for 13 to 14k. that just the starting price you can go lower. So, yea they are asking to much.

It all depends on where you live in the US. Kelley Blue Book is the biggest crock of s*** I have ever seen. I am a dealer, and nobody around me sells cars for kelley b.b. retail, and the trade value is super super low. Just for example, I am selling a BMW for $17,789. The K.B.B. retail value is $21,xxx. That's a big difference. Anyplace charging you K.B.B. retail is ripping you off. Regional market conditions do vary car to car, and I am in Mass. Maximas wholesale for around 13k, for 2k-2k1 SE/GLE in good condition.

we talked to the dealer tonight, and after talking with both the salesman and the sales mgr, they came down to 14,500 out the door, which is STILL a 1000 more than i told them i wanted.

I got my 01 SE w/ 18k miles on it, fully loaded, for $17k. $14,500 is still high IMO.

you think that is high?
around here you have to pay 19,700$ for a 03 6 speed base SE with 24K miles
or 18,500$ for an 02 6 speed with same miles base model

Like someone said in an earlier post, many 00 I30's go for that price, if you don't know an I30 is the equivalent of a Maxima but rebadged Infiniti...more rare though

Look up some I30's and an extra 500 is worth the dealer service (if it's still in warranty)

Walk out. Tell them you want it for $13,000 out the door. If they really want your business, they'll settle and call you back.

It's not that easy to just walk out after looking for a car that you really wanted and found it. What if dealership doesn't call you back? Would you go back in there and make a deal again or look somewhere else? Just try to get some $$$ off; unless you won't mind looking for another car somewhere else.

Yes, it is that easy. You know how much you want to spend. You know how much the car is worth TO YOU. You make your offer a little low and see if they counter. If they do, keep going until it's in the price range you're willing to pay. If they don't, leave and keep looking.

Why isn't it that easy?

Try looking at autotrader.com and double check your price on NADA.com. IMO 14,000+ is too high.

Maybe for you. Not for me. If I find something that I really want, it's hard to just let it go and start looking someplace else; especially when buying used cars

Not to be rude, but you and my father-in-law are a salesman's dream. My f-in-law didn't even know you could negotiate the price. He was saving for more than a year to get his new honda when I told him my car listed at $31k and i bought it for $25.5 ... he was shocked, and I finally sat him down and explained how I bought my car and that he could have bought his new honda a year earlier if he negotiated the price. He went back and said "I'll give you $xx" and they said "ok" and I said "you offered too much." He's still happy, though, so that's all that matters I guess.

If you can't walk away you will never, ever get a good deal. I'm not saying you *have* to walk away, I'm saying you need to be ready to if the salesman doesn't budge. Know your price, know the value, and do not spend more than that. I've even had friends bring me to keep them from doing something dumb... having someone who is not emotionally attached to the car is a good thing.

it just mental game theyplay to increase the price. just go in and say take or leave it. and move on to find a nicer car plus, the market is flooded with use car. people just buy new cars. Important won't waste your time. salespeople are know to do this .

It's not just cars for me. It's clothes and many other things too! If I find something that I like, I just buy them. Can't just walk away
