Changing trans. fluid on a MANUAL ?

I was told that since my gears fail to shift smoothly, that I should change my trans. fluid.
ANY ADVICE on what kind of fluid, how much of the fluid, to put in. ALSO where is the drain plug for the trans. fluid located, what type of socket does she need, etc.

and ANYTHING else that might be important. THANKS

I personally use Amsoil. You could use Redline also.

Link to directions.

Contact talkinghorse from this board. He will give you a great deal on Amsoil Products.

Check the FAQ in the fluid section.

Piece of pie.

Look under car at bell housing. You will see two bolts. The lower one is the drain and the one higher up is the fill point. The tranny will take 2 1/2 quarts and you will need a pump to get it from the bottle up to the fill hole. When filling, make sure the car is on level ground because the signal you have put enough tranny fluid in is extra fluid running out. It is easy to do. Hope this helps.

Actually, if you remove the intake snorkel only (part that has the temp sensor in it) you can use gravity fill method using only a funnel/tube setup. Thats how I did mine. Pretty easy to do.

I have a write-up with some pics on my site, if you care to see what it looks like on a 2002 6-speed.

when i changed the trans fluid 01, i broke the F-ing drain plug thing. On the 00-01 its like a sensor with a wire that goes into the trans. its held in by 1 bolt , so i took the bolt out and started prying cause it wouldn't come out, and guess what, it snaped....i glued it back. yeah thats right. im an idiot.

Yeah, my 2000 didn't have a drain plug, I had to remove the Reverse Switch (that sensor-ish thing with a wiring harness and a single bolt holding it in)
Be very careful with it.
The 2000 has a filler plug with a 1/2" indentation, like for a ratchet or torque wrench... no hex-head bolt.

be very careful cause when you take out that wiring harness with the one bolt in it the fluid shoots out like crazy

mine was on a lift when I did mine and the tranny fluid went everywhere

Is there a particular milegage that this is recommended to do or just do it when you feel you are not shifting smoothly. I have a 2k2 manual.

I've heard every 30K miles is a good rule of thumb...
