Suspension question

How long would the struts/shocks last if i use aftermarket springs such as TEIN H-tech rolling on 18"s? I'm doing this mainly for appearance since i hate that wheel gap from stock springs but dont have enough money to do the whole setup at once. Any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldnt advise it, being that the stock shocks will not be able to use their full travel. You might run into issues like premature wear and poor ride control.

Wait, save up, do it. "Do it right the first time, or dont."

It seems like lots of people on the org have lowering springs and left on stock struts. Hopefully they'll let us know their opinion. They'll probably wear out faster but your not going to be using them anymore so if the ride isn't that bad why not? You can buy good shocks/struts when they wear out.

If you lower your car with Tein and use stock struts, your ride will be very bouncy. I don't know about you, but I dont like bouncy ride.

You should be fine for little awhile on stock shocks/struts with certain springs. I did that on Maxspeeds and it was fine for about 6mos. when I changed my setup to Tein/GR-2's

I had my car lowered in May and rode on the stock shocks/struts till last week when the back ones blew and I changed them all to KYB/GR2, the ride wasnt bad on the stock but you have to figure if you wait you will have to pay instalation again and thats a B!#ch. So I suggest holding out and just getting it done all at once.

no one can really answer that question for you. it all depends!

some people have done it and they lasted only a week. others have gotten a good year or longer out of them.

it doesn't matter what spring brand or wheel size you do it with. either way, your stock shocks are going to be put under alot of pressure and WILL die sooner than they would otherwise.

i put MaxSpeeds on my 2k WITH STOCK SHOCKS about a month ago now. all you can do is cross your fingers and hope you get as much time out of them as you can.

i DON'T agree that you SHOULDN'T do it just because you are not doing shocks AND springs at the same time. especially if you do the install yourself.

i could of afforded the new shocks also (i'm going to get KYB GR2s), but i'm one of those cheap people who believe in "not fixing it if it isn't broken". i didn't care to spend the cash on the new shocks now when i didn't care about any performance gains from them or anything - i just HAD to get ride of that 4x4 gap before i went insane!

i did the install myself - so it was free! it was surprisingly easy. i have a how-to website that i made - let me know if you want the link.

when my stock shocks do finally die, i'll buy the GR2s for $280ish and install them at that point. just don't care to spend the money now when i don't need to. who knows, they could hold out for a year or so...and i may not even have this car still then!

now, if you have to have someone install for you (which will cost you $100-$300), that is a different story. you might as well save the $ and do them together.
