I got behind a dump truck a few days ago. Of course he spilled a few rocks, and I cringed as the rocks flew into me. I washed the max yesterday....it gave my hood about four gouges 2 - 3 inches long, in the middle of my hood, just above the nissan embelem. I am seriously going to sell my car because the paint drives me so crazy.

I had a 1992 Maxima se bought new. Traded it in for a 2002 Maxima gle in 2002. The 92 Maxima had 3 paint chips in 10 years. The 2002 from day one had paint chips. Paint also coming off around rear door sills. Paint peeling on front bumper. Have talked to dealer and to corperate to no avail. They will do absolutely nothing about the paint.

Today's paint system no longer uses lead and is water-based, which is why it is much more susceptible to chips. Our company has exposure to other vehicle's paint systems and it is a problem across the board........whether it is mercedes, bmw, infiniti, ferrari, lamborghini, porsche, hondas, etc. They are all experiencing the same problems, which is why protecting the front end w/ paint protection film is essential for those planning on keeping the vehicle for some yrs to come. It will help maintain resale value and the film will not yellow over time. When it comes time to sell the vehicle, the film could be left on the car for the next owner or removed w/o harm to the paint........in addition, no two-tone effect as well.

Please feel free to email us at sales@premiermobilegroup.com for more information about our services.

Paint Chips

First, I'm impressed that this thread is still alive although that really isn't a good thing. Nevertheless, I need to mention that I no longer have any of the 5 maxima's that I had at various times (1993, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004). Not for lack of interest because I do miss my 03 SE, but just have different needs at the present time (350Z Roadster, FX45).

Anyhow, back to this thread...I never did get any where with this through Nissan and I never really pursued anything. As a matter of fact, I only had the Merlot AE through November of 01 when I traded for an 02 SE in Silver. I'll tell you I didn't have as much problem with chipping, but I also ran with a nose mask almost all the time (the AE could only wear a hood cover due to the front fascia being different). Then, i traded the 02 SE in August 03 when I got my Roadster.

I wish you all the best as you try to get something done...and it appears some of you have legitimate paint quality issues. But I doubt that you will be successful as the cars age more and more. Formulations have changed, as has been mentioned, and the paints, although environmentally more friendly in application, are less environmentally tolerant in the real world I guess you can say. With the roads in the mess they are around here, it's a surprise to me that I don't have more problems than I do on my existing cars.

My Nissan Maxima 2001 has MANY paint chips. I only drive 10 minutes to work and back and have found many new "dings" on my paint. My car is garage kept at home and at work and I only drive the street to work..so I have to agree..this paint is rather generic..

Can I have the link to the website? I would complain, since I have a big chip on the front as well as some on the trunk edges! I wonder why!

For a business class I took, we studied Carlos Ghosn (said: like cone but with a G). This man is a ruthless individual who became COO in 1999 and later CEO of nissan when the company was facing bad times. He vowed to quit if NIssan didn't turn around profits. He came over from Renault and his plan was to hollow out the company by moving manufacturing plants to China (cheap labor) and shutting down Japan plants. I'm sure that one of the things that was done was cut funding to paint R&D which leaves us with crappy paint. I'm not sure if this will help with anything, but there might be a connection if you find that prior to June 99 production cars, the paint was more reliable than post June 99. This still seems like it's a difficult thing to argue unless you go to BBB(better business bureau) and prove a much lower standard than other similar car makers...I'm not a lawyer so I dont' know much about how to go about doing that.

GL!

I had to reply to myself on this one because my paint chipping has gotten worse and I have not had the car repainted. But the car will be paid off this year so a repaint may be in the near future. I am still surprise that Nissan did not address this.

Ugh...

Not to add fuel to an already blazingly burning fire... but does this not look totally excessive? I bought a 2002 maxima GLE with black exterior. There were a few pits when I got it (and a big gash on the hood which theyre repairing), but check out the paint after only 90 miles of careful driving. The pictures make it seem a little worse than it actually is, but it still is insane...

Any ideas on how much it will cost to fix the paint, and possibly coat it in something that will prevent this (other than a car bra... not a fan of the style)? Has anyone had luck with nissan doing anything for free? Ive owned this car for under 2 weeks...

Edit: Also, this car only has ~36,500 miles on it... and it's from Nissan's Certified Pre-Owned program...

These pictures are of the bumper, grille, and around the washer fluid dispenser of the car.

(Caution, the pictures are ~1.7MB each, so 56k beware)

It looks pretty normal for a Maxima. Just use touch up paint on the worst pits. Either that or save your pennies to get it repainted.
