I think it's the speed sensor. Did you odometer stop giving you you speed?

When the coils begin to go three warning lights come on (a very common problem on the 2000-01 max), but usually its the slip, tcs and check engine (not the abs). Is she sure the third light was the abs and not the check engine?

Before you spend $300+ on new coils, bring it to Autozone and have them pull the code(s) for you to verify that is indeed the problem. But if that is the problem call Dave at South Point Nissan (888-254-6060) and mention this forum. Six new coils + shipping will be just under $310.

But the check engine light is not on...so what codes would they check. do the other three lights that come on mean something as well....

also why would the slip and tcs lights go off if the coils are going bad...that doesnt make much sense to me...

Sorry, didn't read the entire thread and misread one of the replies to read that the SES was on as well. I wasn't saying it was your coils (doubt it is) which is why I recommended getting the codes first before doing anything.

There is a procedure to get the ABS light to flash an error code. You can find the procedure documented in a Haynes manual (involves grounding a pin on the data link connector by the fuse block). You can also reset the light by grounding the same pin three times within 12 seconds, each time for a duration of one second. I'd suggest investing the $15 or so and picking up the manual since the procedure is a little hard to describe here.

I just had the same issue on my 1999 maxima. I am still investigating. My brakes seem to be working fine so far. I recently changed my rear brakes about a year ago I guess.

i was thinking alternator... i'm surprised no one has said that yet... you might wanna go to autozone and have your alternator tested for free, so you can at least rule that out as an option

I got my battery changed because the test at Advance showed that it was only running at half the cranking amps and of course they couldn't check the alternator without a good battery. Anway, they checked the alternator and it shows good condition. I will drive it a couple of days to see if the codes clear.
