air intake systems worth it?

I have a 2000 GXE with 80,000 miles. I was considering having EIP Tuning custom build an intake system for $300 (includes installation). Can this affect the car negatively? Will I notice a difference in power without doing the exhaust? I drive it for work everyday and I don't want a loud car, but I would like the boost in HP. Does gas mileage increase because it's able to breathe better with the K&N filter?

It would probably be cheaper to buy an intake and put it in yourself. There are several brands to choose from. Check the group deal forum, I believe someone is selling some at a great price.

Frankencar is like 125$, only louder (still not very loud) at WOT, quiet as stock at below 3000 rpms....
Mpg supposed to be better, but with intake you tend to gun it a little higher, so my mpg is about the same as before. noticeable power increase over 3k rpms. Don't waste money on a custom, just go with one of the proven designs already in production...Frankencar, Injen, etc....or you could always "GAB" it....heres the frankencar:

Sorry I was a little off.....it's 150 with the K&N filter or 190 with the Apexi filter (which is what I have).....plus like 10 bucks for shipping.

As to installation, took me about 2 hours (including taking out the stock air box) and was pretty easy. Depends on how good you are with working on cars...I am fairly good at it.

hehe also you can get it in colors

I can't say how it matches up with the Injen, all I can say is I like the Frankencar.....

got the frankencar, installed it with two friends during the 10 degree weather on campus... the most stupid thing I could have done that day, but it was worth it dude. I love the sound of the car when i gun it. Frankencar is my choice of Intake.

Then again there is Cattman intake kit, the back in action BERK intake kit, Injen CAI, Weapon R Intake, Place Racing CAI, and some other generic intakes that might do the trick. its up to you dude. One thing I dont recommend is paying 300 bucks for intake and install. you can install intake kit in an hour or 3 hours during the cold 10 degree weather

Injen is nice looking. But, if I am not mistaken, I have heard talk that it actually is the least effective due to its design.

I have a K & N filter with just a bracket that connects it to the MAF is it possible to get a midpipe that'll connect the two and give just a little more air flow through the tube. Which is better having no pipe and connecting straight to MAF or a Mid-pipe?

Don't bother. Injen are crap. Just buy a used JWT or Stillen velocity stack pop as long as the filter is in good shape.

I'm from Eldersburg, Maryland. EIP Tuning is just north of here in the town of Westminster. All of the aftermarket crowd goes there. They do have a good reputation.

For you guys with the Frankencar, how long did it take for them to ship? I ordered one a week ago and can't get them on the phone or e-mail... never got a confirmation on the order other than paypal deducted the amount.
