Stolen headlights anyone?

I was just laughing to myself how I am seeing tons of auctions like this on ebay where "the tabs" are mysteriously broken...I wonder why?

I like the explanation for why they were replaced. A likely story. Also, the seller is on the NE coast.

I just posted this question to the ebay seller...we'll see what his response is, just for ***** and giggles....

"OK, I am interested in buying this Maxima light you are selling, but I'm sure you are aware that alot of these things are stolen. So, I would appreciate it if you could provide proof this is from YOUR car. Here's how you can do it. Get a buddy to take a photo of you INSIDE your Maxima (so I can see you actually have one). Also, since you had this light replaced, please scan in a copy of the receipt/work order from Nissan for the new HID light. This will be enough proof for me that you are not selling stolen property. I am sending a copy of this request to the ebay administrators as well, as Nissan Maxima HID headlights are a highly-stolen item. "

...and this to the second seller

"Sorry for the hassle, but if you are an honest seller, you will not mind the following questions:

OK, I am interested in buying this Maxima light you are selling, but I'm sure you are aware that alot of these things are stolen. So, I would appreciate it if you could provide proof this is from YOUR car, or at least some proof of where you got it. Here's how you can do it. Get a buddy to take a photo of you INSIDE your Maxima (so I can see you actually have one)I am sending a copy of this request to the ebay administrators as well, as Nissan Maxima HID headlights are a highly-stolen item. Also, why are you selling the light?"

Amazing that the FBI or someone hasn't started a sting operation on this kind of thing.....I don't even HAVE HID's, and it still makes me mad.

HID theft is felony grand theft. FBI has units that deal with that..esp through ebay, that makes it interstate commerce, which makes it jurisdiciton of FBI, not local cops. I am a "G-man" myself, so I know a little about federal law enforcement....

This guys description makes him sound like a dumbass. He says he is not sure how it attaches, yet he provides a fair description of how to fix it and a photo of a new light. One of you NY/NJ guys who had your lights stolen might want to alert the local police where your lights were stolen. They might be interested in talking to this guy.

Those are definetly stolen, but the sad thing is that people are still buying them everyday keeping the demand high and our cars still at risk.

Has someone actually contacted the FBI or another Law Enforcement agency in the NJ/NY area yet??

I live in Dallas so I wouldn't have a direct reason to call.

I did several months ago when I suspected an Ebayer of selling stolen Maxima HIDs. The detective indicated that unless I saw them being stolen, there was nothing he could do. NOTE: I called a Brooklyn NYPD precinct seeing as the seller's location was listed as Brooklyn NY.

So much for that avenue.

I suspect you have to call the community in which you filed your police report. They would be a bit more interested in finding a resolution then the NYPD.

maybe if everyone on the org that reads this thread, sends an email to ebay regarding the fact that most if not all 2k2, 2k3 maxima headlights being sold are stolen they may stop them from being sold there. If nothing else they will be aware that they my be contributing or aiding in the sale of stolen items. They way i look at it, it couldn't hurt and it would only take each of us a few minutes of our time to do. If anyone has a link to where the best place the emails to please post it.

Irish - That's almost exactly what I was planning to do! Except I wasn't going to be quite as kind! Good call.

There's nothing you can do to prevent thiefts from stealing your HIDs. There are anti-theft kit but that's not going to stop them from stealing.
