This might sound a bit strange, but I can swear I can get quicker acceleration my depressing the gas pedal halfway instead of flooring it. I have an automatic by the way. Any ideas or am I just imagining things.

Sometimes when you floor it, takes the auto tranny a while to kick in, depending on what RPM you were in right before you floor it. But I assure you, you will go faster pedal to the metal.
