Shfiting auto tranny from reverse to "D" before coming to full stop - bad?

Lately, when backing out of a driveway or a parking spot, I have been lazy with the whole stopping and then putting my car in "Drive" like I have been doing ever since I got the car. I just wait until I am almost stopped, and then switch from reverse to D. There is no jerking or strange noises, and I do it at like ~1MPH. Can this hurt the tranny in the long run?

I think people probably dont use "neutral" as much as they could. While rolling back especially on a slope, why use reverse (in an auto trans.), gravity is our friend, plus the engine is freed of some load while turning. So come to a 98 % complete stop and just tap once into D!

I agree with this, I always use neutral in this circumstance. I leave in reverse just enough to build momentum and then flip to N (like backing/rolling down a driveway...)

Just keep doing what you're doing- you'll find out!

Think of it this way: You wouldn't normally stop your car while driving at say, 30 mph on the street by dropping the gear selector into reverse, would you?

This is one of those driving techniques that will, in time, lead to premature failure of your transmission. Hope Nissan will replace it under warranty.

Just my $0.02 worth..(from a mechanical engineer)

In the "long run" it will probably cause unecessary wear on your clutches. When you have the forward clutch engaged, you should stop all movement before engaging the reverse clutch. It's hard to pinpoint how much damage it will do but why chance it?

I once changed my gear from D to P while STILL stopping at around 5-10mph on my 1989 Maxima (sold) and it STOPPED the transmission leakage I had before.

Nissan...

This is a good question. I've been putting my car into drive, after a slow reverse (just like you described), without coming to a complete stop, ever since I started driving. I've done with all my cars. I never got resistance from the shifters or strange noises when I did that so I thought it was ok. Hmmm, now I wonder. Thanks for putting the doubt in my mind! j/k.

I love my Maxima. No mods, it is now exactly the way it was born. Windows are tinted really dark, one level lighter than limo tint, but that's really a personal safety measure. No one is interested in seeing that...thanks for asking though.

I usually put it in Reverse and as I'm about to grab Drive, I stick it in neutral for about 1-2 seconds.
