I have no hate for the 3G Alty; I just wish Nissan would have made an effort to make the interior have at least the same quality of the 5G Max (which isnt all that in and of itself). IMO, the Alty with the sport package is better looking than 5G Max (AE included).

Maybe that guy wishes he had Maxima. He put the rims from one on his Altima.

The reason the Altima gets slightly better 1/4 times is because of the 6 vs. 5 speed as well. 1 less shift during that 1/4 mile stretch.
well I ran my fastest 1/4 mile time shifting into 4th gear (14.0 @ 99, 2.2 60ft.)

and thats out of 30+ runs

02 altima 3.5 5-speed- 2.5" custom exhaust, y-pipe, wai.......

I don't any of these replies address the main post. The original poster already stated that the Altima's interior was sub-par, no need to repeat it with every reply.
I don't think he's saying the Altima is better car overall than the Maxima, but it's possible it may have a few advantages over God's Chariot.

My sister has a 2002 Altima and the system in her car definitely bangs a lot harder than the one in my 03 GLE

I do like both cars, the thing I noticed is the feel of the cars. The Maxima has a feel to it, every one I have ever been in feels solid. The Altima is a great car, but has design flaws the i'm not sure I trust. In the Alti, hammer the car on an auto and it gives a groan and rattle and noises that a trans shouldn't make, sounds like its dying. Why in gods name did nissan put black numbers and letters on an amber background on the radio and climate control. I put on my sunglasses and the radio is gone, you can't see it. Also, the interior is cheap, plastic, but I have driven 02s with lots of miles and it still sounds solid, more solid than my Max. Not sure I care much for the Bose in either car, I got mine cause I got the GLE, given the choice I would not have checked the box. I look at the max and I like it, probably why I bought it and not an alti. My opinion, but the Maxima is a better car than the Altima, duh. The Maxima has to, its Nissan's flagship car, the Altima still a very good car, has to cut corners somewhere, for some reason, Nissan decided to do it on the interior and with cheaper sheetmetal. I've looked at the Altima 2.5, why, well because 600+ miles a week and my 30k car is worth 14k, sure i'd buy one, its still a Nissan. Chris

These 2 cars can be compared like the camaro & firebird of yester-year. Same cars, different model. Really, Car quality X Driver are the 2 main factors. Its common for 2 cars to come off the lot, one after the other, and one car can be seriously faster. Most of these models with the 3.5 are identical in speed or close. I guess people have to get over the idea that 10hp, or 20 hp marketed by Nissan is relative.......Car companies just want your money, any way they can.

Alright, here goes. I'm in Guam right now and have a 3.5SE Altima for a rental. I've been driving it for a week now. Here are my adjusted thoughts.

Pros: It's ride and handling are much better than my Maxima. The dash isn't quite as bad as I first thought and although I like the dash layout of the Maxima much better, I find the Altima more comfortable for longer trips. It has more leg room. It has a better turning radius than my Maxima.

Cons: While ride is better than my Maxima, it doesn't feel nearly as sure footed as the Max. The Altima has incredible torque steer problems and I find the tires sliding everywhere in the rain.

wow, you ran a 14.15 with an AT 350Z? Has anyone seen a 2k2 or 2k3 Max do a road test with the auto trans? I haven't seen one yet. Isn't the HP rating of the Max 255 vs the altima's 240hp? I think after break in, both cars can do 0-60 a wee bit quicker than the indicated 5.8 and 6.0 from the magazines. They need to test them after like 15 to 20K on the motor. Seems like the 6 speed Max is harder to find, expecially used. Anyone know if the limited slip was an option for 02 and 03 for the max?

Initially I was also going for the alty especially when there were rumors of it getting a new dash in 2003... I waited and saw the 2003 but to my great dissapointment - the same dash... I really like the exterior of the altima. If only they would put the maxima dash in the altima...

Interior fit & finish IMHO is much better in the maxima than the Altima.

when i spotted a 2003 6-spd HLSD TE w/4500 miles on the dealers lot and got the price down to $18,500... it was over... i dont regret buying the maxima over the altima.

I think when it comes to exterior looks, the Altima might get my vote, but I do realzie the fit and finish is below average in the new Altimas. . . they're still great quick sedans though. I used to own a 93 Altima, in fact, it was my first car - so I have lots of repsect for the Alty.

An OEM rear spoiler and a rear window spoiler would complete the look.

I still stick to my orignal overall opinion, but if you could stick the Maxima dash inside the Altima, it would provide the best of both worlds. I personally like the outside of the Altima, slightly more than my Maxima.

And have the Altima quieted down like the Max. Altima seems louder at speed.
