I am wondering do you all think Nissan will sell us out by making a maxima and a altima better than our current Maximas if the roomers hold true? I've heard a lot of people say how the Maxima's are gonna jump up in horses, but I was wondering why would Nissan so quickly sell its Nissan customers out, especially the AE people (you have my condolences). Cause if everything holds true, we all will most likely end up on the short end of the stick. You'd think the AE would be the legendary edition, not just something to be surpassed a year later. Roomer even has it that the Altima will kick out 240 hp. I know this is just roomers, but I'm still kinda worried about my Maxima legacy and how fast My car will depriciate, which might be faster than Clintons zipper

Sold out... nah... i'll still love my car, even though there will be bigger, faster, and meaner maximas out there eventually....

And i dunno about depreciation... Just cuz a new model comes out does not mean that your Maxima is no longer a top-notch vehicle.... It still can outperform <b>MANY</b> sedans out there.... Some "<i>sports</i>" cars as well!!! And that won't change for years to come!!!!

If Nissan can put out better vehicles every 2 years, hats off to them... I just fear that the 240hp altima, and 265hp maxima might be too good (read : too soon), to be true for 2002.... If so, then 2003 will be a killer year for Nissan!!!!

PS... if you fear buying something obsolete, stay away from computers!!! I spent a lot of time putting together my dream system almost two years ago... Even tho it can still beat a healthy handful of systems currently being sold on the market, it's nowhere near top of the line.... Evolution...

But you all forget something

Just because the car gets more hp doesn't mean a thing. It will also be getting more WEIGHT! Look at the 1999 Maxima compared to the 2000. What happened? We all got a redesigned exterior/interior, more weight and more power. The Maxima is going to get bigger, more powerful and slower. Look at the progression in the SHO Taurus. It was a mean car before they made it into a fat-a$$ family sedan that was just that. It lost it's enthusiasts roots and became a big, fat, bloated pig. Who would want to drive the current SHO?

I tell you they are going to make it bigger, roomier, more powerful, and slower. Nissan is going away from what made the Maxima what we all came to love back in the 3rd Gen days of the 4DSC in favor of making it into a full luxury sedan. Sentra or the Altima will take the Maxima's place and the Maxima will slowly fade out of the picture. A sad day but at least I can rip the engine from it and keep my Maxima. It would be a shame to see it end up like the current Cefero (sp?)

prolly.. well just be glad that we drive "japanese made" cars for now.. cuz i heard the altima would be sharing the same platform as the maxima for about a year adn then the new max is going to be released after that. the altima might be a lil beefier than the max durign that time period tho.. but another thing popped up during a discussion i had wiht a friend that works for nissan.. he siad that they jsut set up a new plant. and the next max might be made there. so that means we got the last batch of japanese made maxima's and the new ones are soon to be made in the USA.. so either way we gain quality over quantity.. i would go for the quality.. so i don't trip eitehr or. and i'm sure our max's (tho weaker than the new) would have a higher mpg than the larger displaced ones..

It's the nature of the business.

Since it looks like the Max will be upped in hp (2002) and redesigned for 2003 and the 2002 Altima will be upped in size and also in hp(supposedly on 4/11/01), it's no longer a question of if but a question of when. If you look back at other car models, you'll often see that the maker tries to push a special "limited-edition" such as the AE right before a big change occurs (i.e. current Altima and Honda Accords). There's no surprise there. IMHO, there's also no selling out. If the Max does get bigger and now is able to compete with the Toyota Avalon and other similar full-size sedans, then in the big picture, it's better for the Nissan brand which translates to more respect and appreciation for the Max and other Nissans from the general public. I agree with tomz17 in that the Max is a good car regardless and obsolescence is unavoidable. You just gotta enjoy the car that you purchased and get the most out of it. Personally, I'm very excited over the developments in Nissan and am glad that they are trying to compete with Honda and Toyota and hopefully break the label that Nissan has of being a second-tier Japanese import. The Max is definitely still a bang for the buck.

Honestly, I must add that the future looks bright for nissan... They will have a little bit of everything!!!

A really killer sports car... (z)
An awesome selection of trucks/SUV's
A full sized sedan flagship (Maxima)
A mid-sized, mean&speedy altima
and a budget sentra.....

Go Nissan!!!

-Tom

PS.. if it helps you sleep at night, just think of the Altima as the next "Maxima"... It promises to be a light car with a very powerful engine...
