Good question. Mine does the same thing when it's very cold. Last about a second.

Mine continues till the engine temp reaches a good and high temp...it lasted for more than 5 minutes yesterday....I drove off after that and after 5 minutes stopped and checked and the noise was gone. Are you getting it from the belt area which is left of the engine?

Sounds like a loose belt. Check the tension on the belts

Yup. It only does it when it's really cold (ok, 'really cold' in Maryland is 20 degrees F or lower which is probably considered balmy in your neck of the woods), but it stops so quick I can't pinpoint where the noise is coming from. My noise is LOUD and almost sounds like a dry bearing.

Mine makes a squealing noise sometimes at <20F temps coming from the starter... almost like the starter solenoid is sticking. Doesn't last long though...

but if it is cold..then how can the belts become loose? Dont the belts shrink in the cold? Loose belts would most likely be in the hot temp areas...I dunno..just a shot in the dark

Mine does the same thing when really cold and my belt is new, I put some belt dressing on and tightned the belt and it seems better no loud squeal on start.

Its the starter. There is a DIY thread that explains how to regrease it so the sound stops. I believe its in the Installation and howto section. Check it out, it worked for me.

I had the same thing. It was loudest when cold but still stayed there when hot, much quieter though. A new alternator, courtesy of Nissan warranty fixed that. My alternator died.

Could the problem of loose belt be related to a high pitch whine at 4,000 plus RPM?
