Cam or not to cam that is the question.

Cam or not to cam that is the question.
Well, tax season has come again and good ole Uncle Sam has decided to give me a pretty decent return. My question is what should I spend my money on?I've done about all you can do N/A to my Maxima or at least anything that is known to work. I'm thinking of getting cams and a air/fuel controller or the TS Ecu. So what do you think or what other ideas do some of you have?

Cams only kick in above 5000 RPMs or so on the 3.5 Altima dyno I saw. Go to nissanperformancemag.com for specs. However, if you want a nice VTEC like kick at high RPMs, go with the cams. There is no other way of putting on that kind of power. But its a lot of money money!!

Is it really a vtec like kick or is it more through the whole range with those cams?
I would really like something with a broad range increase. And while we are on the subject of N/A cars.... anyone know a decent exaust that is QUIET?
Greek... you gotta stop teasing me with that sig pic

How bout getting yourself some Nismo VQ35 heads?
http://www.performancenissanparts.co...roducts_id=311
NISMO VQ35 Heads 46cc Chamber
[11040RRZ30] $2,000.00
MSRP $2526.68 for Left and Right Head
These heads will increase the compression ratio of the VQ35DE
For a Normally Aspired motor these will greatly increase horsepower.
These heads require the use of VK45 Valves and Retainers, Nismo Highlift Springs, and Cams grinded out of the Nismo Blank Camshafts or NISMO, JWT Camshafts.
This kit includes the Right and Left head.
*we will be posting a photo of the NISMO Head next to a OE head soon so check back for updates!*

The cams I know of, the ones I saw the dyno for, kick in like VTEC. There is a slight loss of power in the lower RPMS, then the cams kick in big time. here's the dyno for you
Also, in regards to a quiet cat-back, I heard the new frankencar one is very nice...

Thanks for the info on the cams... I may have to wait for a new maxima instead tho.
I just brought my car in (bought it 12 days ago) because of the slipping 1-2 shift, and the dealership says I need a new tranny.
They showed me the pan and the magnets were completely covered with debris.
It's fight time with these guys. Used car with 97k and they dont want to help me out. Have a 50/50 warrenty, but i told them that was not good enough since they sold me a car with a pre-existing condition.
This sux.

"but think about winding the engine up to 7500, sound would be sweet."
Yeah if parts hold together, are crank and rods forged if not might not want spin that high.
So no one knows what 0.05" durations, LSA or ICL are for these cams and the stock one?

Crank is and the engine can spin 8000rpm with STOCK cams. Some are even saying 9000rpm.

So they're forged pieces then, right? If they're cast let me who is spinning that high I'll be sure to stand out of path of parts when it blows. Does anyone have anf information on the internals of these motors here or should be surfing another board?

Crank is...rods aren't. Rods are 'blasted' or something that makes them stronger though.
Manufacturer tranny endurance tests run the VQ35 at 8000rpm for 300+ hours *SUPPOSEDLY*.

Actually, per SAE document:
CONNECTING RODS – Connecting rods are usually cold coined to correct the deformation induced in the Isection by the heat treatment process. However, the VQ35DE connecting rods are made of vanadium steel, making the heat treatment process unnecessary. Isection deformation is corrected by hot coining to prevent deterioration of fatigue strength due to residual stress and deterioration of buckling strength due to dislocations. This improvement of I-section strength allows the sectional area of the connecting rod to be reduced for a weight saving.
