Thinking of entering the Max in the Silver State Classic!!!

This is a road in the middle of the dessert that covers 90 miles. The speeds are unlimited to some cars and your car is classed for an average speed. I am thinking of running my '03 Max. I feel I can average 120 mph based off the course description, the question is what do I need to do to get classed at 120mph.....I'll find out!

I'm going to find out more and hopefully represent the Maxima community at the Silver State Classic, anyone want to join me?

Mark

Looks like a fun time. I wish I were closer to those things. 120 mph is a pretty lofty goal though...I know that with a lowered Max 120 can feel stable, but I just don't know if I would wanna drive 120 for what...90 miles? Your tires might not be able to handle that. If it were me, I would just go for 100 mph or something around there.

I want to do this sooooooo bad, but it cost too much for me. I'll take my chances on I-5 LOL. I would replace those nittos with some S-03s before you race though. I saw video of the JUN 350Z blow a tire there at 200mph....wasnt pretty.

What i really want to do is get some people together and rent the streets of willow for a day. Look at this track: http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/...s/StreetLg.gif

Good luck if you do that. Mount a camera and film!

Yep tires would be replaced. My Maxima seems to not have much drama at 120mph. I would feel more comfortable with at least a rollbar incase a tire decides to blow up.

I am running Kumho's speed rated at 94W, or 168mph.

Indeed, just looked at the site, looks very interesting. Good luck and represent the Max well

That looks like great fun! I was thinking that a blower would be ideal for something like that with sustained high speeds. say if you are using 90% of your available HP normally aspirated, versus 70% of your available HP with forced induction might make it easier to qualify and also perform on the course. Heat being a massive power killer, a normally aspirated Maxima might be pushing too hard over that distance. NACA scoops might be a really good addition to your hood to cool the engine even more (read more here: http://www.rguerra.com/velocity/fina...Structure.html
) The Dodge Viper has a NACA scoop on the hood. http://www.viperclub.org/faq/naca.html
and an oil cooler and upgraded clutch with kevlar pucks. ooooh yeah!

Of course if someone out there would like to sponsor me and gimme all these goodies free....message me! message me! oh please please

I will also run an in-car camera of the run. My current tires are Z-rated but I will be in need of new ones by then anyway.

The run would be about 45 minutes, I feel a stock Max would run comfortably cool at 120ish mph. I remember running my Datsun 510 at nearly 6k rpms for over an hour when I was younger and it is still running great today, 12 years later. Lets have some faith on the Nissans!!!

Don't think there is a need nore would I do that to my car. Maybe I am crazy but my Max cruises at 100+mph pretty comfortably. I am more comfortable with a stock car than a boosted car for this event, remember what compressed air does? Yep gets VERY hot.

How many miles you guys think you would get on a full tank of gas going 120mph? 90 miles should be doable right? How hot would the motor get out there in the desert? Tranny cooler, heavy-duty radiator fluid, new tires are a must. Good luck.

Open road racing the Max

Excuse me for dragging up this old thread, but as a newbie, I'm not allowed to start my own yet. In case anyone else is thinking about entering the Silver State or any other open road race in a Maxima, I thought I would post my experience.

Saturday I ran the Big Bend open road race (www.BBORR.com) in West TX in my bone stock '02 6-spd. I entered the 120 mph class, which required 5-point harnesses, an SA2005 helmet, and fire extinguisher. Basically, the car was flawless. It ran as fast as 138 mph, and was still accelerating very slowly. No problems with instability at speed, no overheating, and no trouble averaging 120 mph. BBORR is a much more challenging course than SSC, so 120 would be EASY at that race. Obviously, good tires, proper safety equipment, and everything in good mechanical condition are essential. But I wouldn't hesitate to run this car 120 or 125 at BBORR.

I usually run V8 RWD sports cars, but my engine was apart this year. So, I dropped to a slower class and ran the family sedan. I couldn't be happier with the way the car performed.

Oh, regarding the question about fuel consumption, I burned a 1/4 tank in 59 miles (each way, BBORR is an out-and-back event). So, 90 miles should be no problem on a full tank. I think I got ~10 mpg on course.

Good tires, fresh suspension and a roll cage and you should be good to go.

I'm thinking about running mine in October in the Texas Mile.

I think maybe he should get an award since he is the first to ever bump an OLD thread and it be a pretty good post. The true test has been that you did not shut it down, and no one flamed him.

Good info actually, I didn't even know this kinda stuff existed. I'd be interested but I'd definitely get a faster car first before trying it.

That's because most of us are too chicken-**** to run our 10 year old cars that fast for that long, and for him to talk about it with such simple confidence is a little humbling.

Who can flame that? It's brilliant.
