Should I even buy a '00-'03 Maxima?

I have been reading posts for the past few days and I see a lot of complaining. I am now wondering if I should abandon my plans of purchasing a Maxima and go back to my original choice (2002.5 VW GTI VR6). Are Maxima's not as reliable as I thought?

eh.........how do I start?

Don't let the owners of these cars desuade you from getting what you want. Rule of thumb is-if there is b!tching to do, then people will do it.

The maxima is a great car for the $$$, IMO best FWD car with crazy horsepower and HIDs standard (2k2-2k3 of course) you could get for $23-$29k brand new.

yeah it has its quirks, but what car these days doesn't???

you think a VW is going to be any less of a headache? and a VW is going to cost more to repair in the long haul.

go to a VW webboard and see what they have to say...it's going to be the same type of b!tching...nodoby goes out of his way to post "I love my car today!!" They come here to read, learn, and get answers to questions which usually arise from problems.

If you want to compare the two cars buy a consumer reports and see what they have to say.

We could always get another forum to do a poll on which is a better car... a 5th gen max or a vw gti...

maxima is so much better than vw...

first nissan has the best engine built...

and usual people here only post when they have problems so others can help

but overall maxima is a really really good car...its the fastest sadan in its category

i have had a 01 for 3 year now and the only problem i had was changin my rotors ... nothing else

Choosing a VW over a Maxima, because of reliability issues? That's comical. Truly hilarious. I guess you've not seen the JD Power and consumer report numbers (anecdotal evidence aside) rating most of the late model VWs consistently at the bottom of the barrel for quality.

Something I see here sometimes is "I'll never buy another Nissan" because of poor customer service. However, I've seen plenty of "I'll never buy another VW" because of poor quality. Personally I"ll take a good car with bad customer service any day than the other way around.

Put up a poll if you like - I wager that you'll find the average buyer of their 5th gen is quite pleased with their purchase.

If you don't want to buy a Maxima, that's fine. Just don't patronize VW, hoping for a higher quality vehicle.

I know the GTi's have there share of problems as well. I had a '01 GTI VR6 for 2 years and 35k miles and it was bulletproof. I sold it for a $2k profit (that's another story ) I've always liked the Maxima. I bought a perfect 1990 240sx and love it. I now want a great sporty cruiser. I also want something a little more growns up. I know the Nissan V6 is one of if not the best V6 ever made. It is damn impossible to find a 5 spd loaded in black or blue. I'm lucky I have a car that's in perfect shape, time and $ to wait.

While no car is perfect, (as you can easily see from peoples experiences in this forum) personally I would never buy a VW. I know far to many people that regret buying them.

Consumer Reports' most recent reliability survey.

Sam03 you said it right.
The maxima is still a best buy from consumers report. Of course your going to see about the problems on this forum, this is kinda the point.

You know a manufacturer sucks when mitsubishi and hyundai both are better than it for reliability

also take into account most members of the org are performance ethusiasts. We drive our cars fairly hard and fast.

my old lease 2000 auto had no problems whatsoever for the three years i drove it (besides paint issues). Plus considering it was a lease, you can guess how i drove it.

This chart is VERY revealing in two respects:

1) VW is pretty handily beat by nearly every other mainstream nameplate (exc. Kia and Daewoo) NOTE: Kia quality is steadily improving; thank you Hyundai.

and

2) There's a large disconnect between the issues on the Nissan side versus Infiniti. Acura and Lexus nameplates rank only slightly above Honda and Toyota (all 4 ranked pretty high) but, Infiniti (also ranked high) ranks well above & beyond Nissan (roughly industry avg). What gives??

still a great car for the money.... maximas seem to have lots of problems on this forum.... but u have to realize that more people complain more than they praise, so u won't see nearly as many good threadds on here..

I think you should look closely at this site before buying a VW.

I love the exterior but the interior is god awful and cheap looking for that car. Too expensive. For the $ I'd rather have a used BMW.
