cutting springs

cutting springs
i have a set of maxspeed springs that i want to cut to lower my car about 3/4 of an inch. what is the best way to cut springs? what do you use to cut them? and how do i know how much to cut off? thanks.

If I wanted to experiment, not based on funds to buy Teins which I already have and had Maxspeeds already, I would cut the springs.
My experience with aftermarket cut springs are pretty good. I use to have Eibachs and H&Rs on my previous cars, which I wasn't satisfied with the drop. I also don't like coilovers, since you cannot get an alignment without it going off when u lower or raise the car thereafter. Also, I love when the car is sitting the way I want it to with springs without no raising or lowering.
My honest opinion is, go ahead and do it. But, try to cut it as accurately as you can. You won't be perfect, but try to get there.
I also have other friends of mine, who have done it as well and benefited from it.
Note: Don't cut stock springs. Not worth it. They are not calibrated to handle such a load. But with aftermarket springs, they handle more of a load than stock...

saw this post on the main page and had to put in my thoughts.
you can cut springs and get still have it look as if you got lowering springs, you just have to know how to do it. what most people don't seem to do (cough honduh people cough) is bend the spring for it to fit properly on the perch. you need a cutting torch to do it. you have to heat the spring up where you want to cut it and bend it so that it fits into the perch like it was stock. once you do that you cut it off and it should give you a good lowering look without the crappy camber stuff.
downside is, if i remember correctly, heating up springs tends to take away their springieness so you have to heat them up and cut them a certain way and i can't remember the exact way. there's some books out there that explain how to do it but if you don't have the proper cutting tools and such i'd stay away from cutting them.

I tried cutting Maxspeeds. When we (we being HitManSE) went to install them, they were too short and fit very loosely in the spring perch. If I were to hit a big enough bump in the road, it could pop out of the perch and cause catastrophic alignment issues.
I did, however, cut my Eibachs and they ride just as smoothly as they did before they were cut. With Eibachs, when you cut off one coil, you are only cutting about 1/2"-3/4" off because of the coil design, so they fit quite snugly in the spring perch. The drop is in betweenm the Tein drop and the Maxspeed drop (see homepage). I have no noise- in fact, I actually have less noise than I did with my AGX/Progress combo. Igor911 also has the same setup, which I must tell you is the ONLY thing that I have in common with him.

Are you happy with those fog light bulbs? Where did you get them?
From concrete to wheel well it measres 25 1/2 inches which is just less than a 2 finger gap up front. I put the yellow fogs in my wifes SUV and put the PIAA's back in my car. The yellow fogs are Narva 85w. I got em from suvlights.com.

Instead of cutting springs, you can always just heat them up. The lower stance will look good at first but as your struts start to die, the car will get lowerer and lowerer. Soon the car will be sitting on the bumpstops with the wheels tucked in. That will look so good.

I thought you were serious at first.Anyhow, regarding the other thread, I am still waiting for someone to tell me why chopped springs are bad if I can peronally tell you that thy fit snugly in the spring perch and ride quality has not been remotely compromised.
I am going on almost a year now with ZERO noise issues, ZERO bouncing issues, and ZERO alignment issues.
