Cold Air Intake Systems?

hello everyone. i am a newbie to maxima.org and also a newbie to maximas. i just got my car a few weeks ago. please forgive me if my questions have been answered a thousand times. i would search for it, but we all know the problem with that right now. first of all, i drive an automatic 2001 se anniversary edition with 66k miles. HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS:

1. when i am slowly pullling my car in the driveway, i get this wining noise like a small motor is running sound for a bit. and then it comes on again after i turn the car off. i don't know what the heck it is. does anyone know what i'm talking about? is this normal?

2. i am considering purchasing a cold air intake system for my car. i talked to a guy that has used them before. he reccomended them and said i could get up to a 20 hp gain. however, i wanted to ask maxima owners first. are they worth it? a quick check on ebay showed the parts running for about 70 dollars. are all the brands pretty much the same? should i stay away from some brands?

ebay link...hopefully this will work...

thanks for all your help...

You will only gain about 8-10hp at the very most. WAI's show slightly better gains over the CAI's in our cars.

you are probably right but that is 10 more hp than i have now. and if it will help my mileage then it may be worth it. what did you mean by wai's and cai's? i don't know what that is. is it brands? yeah the ebay link didn't work..figures.. but where should i go to buy one and what kind do i need? i looked at a thread that had this posted, it's 70 bucks: http://www.berktechnology.com/intakes.html
will that work all the same or better? or are the "cold" air intake systems different?

wai-warm air intake
cai-cold air intake
the cold air intakes tend to help more low end but suffer more up top because of the length of piping. you will also have to drill a hole to accomodate the piping and filter. wai tend to be better mid to upper rpms. the berk you are looking at is a great product at a great price and can be installed easily. look in the group deals section here for a berk thread for up to date info. that price expires at the end of this month if i am not mistaken. as for your noise, do you only hear it when you turn the car off or is it something you hear while driving? if you answer that along with where the noise sounds like it is coming from and the conditions it occurs in, myself or someone else might be able to help more.

noise my car is making

i can't tell if it does it while i drive. i don't think it does. it isn't very loud. it does do it like when i am coming to a stop in my driveway ive noticed. then after i turn the car off it does it again. if my car is just sitting there turned off.. i can go up to and put the key in and turn it to the ON position and it makes the noise. it almost sounds like something is winding up and then winding down.. it makes this noise that quickly goes "ahwee-ahwee-ahwee-ahwee-ahwee-ahwee-ahwee" - it only does it for a few seconds then stops. it sounds almost like those automatic antennas that come up and then down. it sounds like it is coming from under my hood. i considered bringing to the dealer and asking them but i'm sure they would want to charge me an arm and a leg just to look at it and tell me what is it. i just figured it might be a common thing that .org members would know about.

thanks,

thanks,
its most likely the electronic motor mounts. they had a tsb for that as well but even after i had it done, it still did it.

motor mounts...

is that what it is? it annoys the crap out of me. its not really a major problem, but it just sounds odd. every time somone gets in my car, and i turn the key, they say.. "what the heck is that." its just embarrassing and i don't want people to think my car is falling apart when they get in it. kinda like when i roll up my drivers side window and you hear "scccrrrreeeecchhhhh!" at about 200 DB. that annoys me even more than the other noise. do you know of ways to get rid of these annoyances?

dont know how to get rid of the motor mounts noise. i tried explaning to my girlfriend what it was but that did not last long. i just told her that i hope they never go bad or she is not going out for a while. as for the windows, you can pick up some lithium grease in a spray can. spray it on a rag and roll the windows all the way down. seperate the channel of the window and wipe all around. push the rag down as far as you can. some have said they just sprayed down into the guide but with tint, im not going to risk something warping the color.

The Only Problem With the ebay CAI intakes is that you have to cut a hole behind the battery in the sheet metal ... although i did this on my 4th gen it kinda made my battery platform weak. i think one of the best intakes out there is INJEN! Sure they might be more.. but there well worth it compared to the ebay cheap ones.. and you dont have to cut a hole in your car!

Some people may argue this but, in my opinion CAI is better just knowing that im not sucking in hot air.

if you need a price on an INJEN let me know'

The only way to get cold air is to get it outside of the engine compartment. Injen does not do that. It sucks hot air from behind the radiator instead.

The Ebay CAI is only a clone of the Place Racing CAI which is superior to any other CAI.
