ECU problems / shady dealership

Sorry for the long post. Turned out to be much longer than expected. My question is at the bottom.

I recently bought a 00' Max Gxe one ebay for $8,500. It has 95,000 miles and is in great shape. When I got the car the guy handed me an additional ECU and said that the current one needed to be replaced. This is the ECU that is located under the radio. He then wrote me a check for $100 and said that he would cover the cost of installation.

I called up the local dealership and they told me that reprogramming + installation should be around $82 (that's their hourly charge). The dealership then called me back later and asked if I was sure I wanted to do this, I said yes, and then they told me that it would probably take 2-3 hours, at $82 per hour. I told them NOT to do anything to the car until I called them back, because of the change in price.

They then called me back later that night just as their service department was about to close. They told me that they had "toyed around with" the car a little and reprogrammed/attached the ECU, but were getting all sorts of engine codes. I reiterated what I stated earlier and told them not to touch the car until I contacted them the next day, as they were about to close.

The next business morning I visited them in person and they said the ECU was the right one and everything would be fine. I got a call tonight that the car was ready to go so I sent my friend to pick up the key because I’m at work. He picks up the key, pays, and is told that the ECU I provided was not put in.

He was told that the ECU was for a California Emissions car with a manual transmission. It was my understanding that all of this could be changed/reprogrammed as long as the part# is the same. Does anyone have any information about this? I’m going to try to get my money back tomorrow. Seems like the dealership is jerking me around.

Thanks, and sorry about the long post.

Anyone know if an ECU from Cali/Manual tranny can be reprogrammed?
