service engine soon
Ok, its happened, I have a 2000 Maxima SE, 5spd, with about 53k miles, and the service engine soon light came on last night. Its not going away. Is there any way I can check to see what is going on without buying a $6000 tester?
Thanks,
JimL

I also have a 2000 Maxima SE 5spd , with about 53K miles. The service engine light came on last night.
Is something like this still covered under warranty (5yr/60k) ?

Check Engine Light
I just had the same problem on my 2001 Maxima
I took it to Nissan and there was a TSB on it. Nissan fixed for free. Unfortunately I previously paid a diagnostic fee to my mechanic thinking something major was wrong.
Here's the notes from the documentation from Nissan:
A C/S Check Engine Light is on
Cause: F
DE98AA Reprogram Engine Control Unit
19 Warn
FC: HD32
Part#: 237105Y006
Claim Type: PP
60217 Found Old Ecm Program Warr - 23710-5Y006 Checked EFI system for P0420 and reprogrammed ECM per NTB00-070a
I believe store code in the ECM is:
DTC P0420
Hope this helps but for sure get the code for free if possible.
P.S. The technician said that this particular problem is covered up to 80,000miles.

Well that helps, I usually do my services at the local Nissan dealer cause they are pretty fair, honest, resonable. I will check it out with them. Lanks for the info, I will post later with the results.

I took my car to the dealer today for the SES light. Well as I should have expected, it turned out to be a bad O2 sensor.
The price for the fix was $290, which at the time, I thought was a ripoff. I guess I was wrong.
Thank you Nissan for putting in horrible O2 sensors.
