Phantom Lock LSD???
I think you would have to take the VLVD out and replace it with phantom grip, I think. On the trannies being different I am not sure about that I thought it was just that the canadian maxs had a VLSD.

I ordered the "green spring" upgrade kit....it was only $33. I figure if I have the whole thing apart, I'd best just put the upgraded springs in there so I don't have to go back and do it again....say if I should happen to get a turbo or SC.
If this give the car the traction it says it will, I'll hold off on getting a Z/g35c for awhile.
The back part of the case on a VLSD car and HLSD car is diff from the non LSD cars, if U look at them side by side the case bulges out on the pass side axle side to accomodate the larger LSD type diff. U cant just install a VLSD/HLSD diff into an open diff tranny- U need the "rear case half" The front- clutch side is same on both trannies. As for diff, I was comparing it to a stock VLSD I30t with 100K miles and my 200K mile SE-R tranny so it might not be a fair comparison, but my LSD still worked on the SE-R on take off and turns. And the PG with Green springs made my Max understeer a whole lot less, and no longer lights up my inner 245-45-17 Azenis in 2 gear around a 40MPH corner. I get more oversteer with the car now. Ofcourse the diff is not in the tranny now cause when it blew out 4th it also took my LSD apart. I'ma be putting another one in it soon-with green springs.

4th Generation Maxima
i emailed PG a while back concerning my 4th gen. there response:
Dear sir,
Sorry for the delayed answers. We have made fitment on the 98 model but not the 97, If you would like to send us your diff we will install the correct unit for you and send it back within 72 hours. This will make sure you get the correct unit. let us know if that will work for you. The Phantom Grip unit would bring your 1/4 mile times down close to the 13's by improving your 60ft times. The Phantom Grip product works just as good as the other lsd's on the market the difference in price is because our units have less parts and converts your diff into a lsd.
Thank you
Responses about the 4th Gen/concerns:
The Maxima doesn't suffer from peg-leg launches like most other FWD cars on the market therefore you won't see any real improvement in 60'.
The Phantom Grip LSDs were the "big thing" a few years ago and now people are starting to have tranny problems because of the design of the unit which puts a ton of stress on the spider gears.
If you really want an LSD, find an I30 tranny. The overall price/install would be about the same and you'd have a safer LSD which is a Nissan OEM part.
While I have a 4th gen maxima, im interested in the phantom grip unit also. maybe this post will bring up more discussion.

Nismo diff for Sentras is pretty good, and its not that expensive really- compared to Quaiffe. Its supposed to come out for the 5spd Maximas. 95-01 trannies are all the same. 89-91 VG30E SE 5spd Max tranny is pretty similar to it also. 89-01 Maximas share the same clutch.

wow, a lot of responses... and only two or three worth investing thought into.
then, of course, the handful of off-topic posts that don't relate to the PG whatsoever.
First: A 4 Page Thread on Honda-Tech about LSDs
How Stuff Work's Take on Differentials
Phantom Grip, what it does is essentially binding the spider gears. It works better than having an open diff, but, it's about as useful as canards.
but, hey, people will keep spending money on them because:
1. they don't have a clue how diffs work
2. they don't have the experience in cars, mechanics or racing
3. they are always looking for the cheaper way of doing an expensive thing.
Not sure how accurate your opinions are, but your post is exactly the kind I'm looking for. I admit I don't know much about diffs, unfortuanately, so I'd like to know the real pros/cons of each option besides just price alone.

all 5spd RWD SR20DETs use the same clutch as the 3.0L motors. I used a JDM HKS clutch (got it for free) for a S13 on my Maxima with no problem, I now use a ACT clutch.- sucks to be a 3.5L owner :P
