autocross

[FONT=Arial] Does any max driver here hit up the autocross scene? if so, do you have any pointers on how to handle a manual hitting the corners?

The car is front heavy, so the method to use is called trail breaking, I haven't tried it yet, last year was my first time and I didn't do it then.

But if you are going into a corner to fast, you are going to experience under steer. Under steer is when you turn the car into a turn and you are not turning as much as you want to. In a rear wheel drive car you would over compensate and hit the gas, the rear end would slid through the corner and you look real cool (although it's not as fast)

If you experiance understeer you need to let off the both the break and the gas and take the turn even WIDER. This will help you gain control of the car and then you can get back on course.

The best way to autocross with a max, IMO is to take it easy. Try to drive the car as smooth as possible. Remember smooth is fast. This car will not corner like a Mini or even a civic, so don't even try. You will make up time on the straights. The nice thing is that our cars are G stock, so we don't have much compition as way of other people beating us on HP, but you need to realize that just about every other car in your catorgy will be lighter then you.

But back to the question at hand is HOW TO TAKE THE CORNER.

Break as hard as you possibly can, then ease off the break as you begin to turn, at the Apex of the turn start on the gas easy, then slowly apply more gas to bring you out of the turn.

Tips:
Giving to much gas while cornering you will spin your tires and lose traction.
Second gear is all you need, exept for the start (unless you have a big track).
Trail breaking - when you get better, is using the hand break only through the turn, so your back tires are slowing the car and you front tires are turning it. This give you more traction in the front tires and keeping them alittle cooler, and that will help you get the most out of the straights.
Don't try to make up time in the turns, just try to get through them without skidding.

And have fun!!! Don't try to win you first time out, just try not to hit the cones and try to improve your time just a little each lap.
