Improving sound dampening
Improving sound dampening
Alright guys, when i first bought my car it sounded alot quieter inside the car. I didnt realize it until yesterday when i was riding around in my friends lexus how loud the interior noise is. I know i dont have a lexus but is there anything to do that can help dampen the outside noise. I tried to use a 3m velcro piece the one that is made of cloth and basically insulate around the windows better. Is there a new rubber surrounding for the doors i can buy? Thanks in advance.
thanks

my door wasnt shutting all the way and it seemed a little loose when it was shut.
you know on the car where the door latches? i attatched a pic below to show what im talking about.
well that was loose so the door didnt have a good seal.
so i tightened it. you can actually adjust it a little. it slides to make it closer or further from the door. i ajusted it and now the door shuts all the way and no wind sound.
just something to try
and one more this that i saw on horsepower tv
close the door all the way.
fold a dollar bill and from the ouside run it along the seal. if it slides in you know where you have a bad seal.
then you can use cocking behind the rubber seal in that spot. it will push the seal out to create a better seal.
close the door all the way.

he said COCKING..lol
Thanks alot guys, i tried to look at the door latches and it seemed tight. When you adjusted it was it tight and you loosened it then moved it in? or was it loose and that was when you moved it in?
Soonerfan, i tried the dollar bill but it seemed good all around.
Maseo, ... lol
I was thinking about trying to stuff something in the rubber to make it seal better but i dont know what. I dont want to use cocking all around.

There is a TSB on windnoise affecting the rear passenger window. Its common on all gen 5's apparently. Mine is doing the same thing. Took it Nissan yesterday and they didn't know anything about it. So I showed em the print out. They said they didn't have the foam piece used to fix it, that they had to order it. So that might be something to look into. Cocking.....
I tried the thing on the tsb that shows whether or not you have the problem by placing a piece of tape around the outside window, that didnt solve the problem. I think it has to do with the door closing, and the rubber, thats why im hoping someone has a fix. I dont know, the sound went away from the drivers door that it used to make when it closed, the noise that a new car makes, like a sound solid. I dont know i didnt even care until i got into my friends Lexus and realized that the noise in my car has gotten louder. Like i said before i know im not driving a Lexus but i do remember getting in his car and thinking how it wasnt that much quieter just smoother.

I saw something on a show also....it said to get like a smoke machine or something like it and use the smoke (with the door closed and the window down) and move the smoke just under the crack of where the door is that way you can see where caulking needs to go. I haven't tryed it but when I saw it looked like it would work
be careful when adjusting the door. When I first bought my car, the rear door was adjusted too far in and that created a lip for rocks to chip. You want a smooth surface all around on the outside of the car or it will get chipped.

My Maxima wind noise has definately worsened esp from the passenger rear window......my dealer also played dumb when I asked about it? Where can I get a copy of this TSB?
Yeah it is extemely bad, yesterday i went to the city and it got so bad that my passengers insisted their doors were open and i told them they werent they tried to close them while driving, you know open and close them, but the problem still persisted. I bought these wheels i got now, and the guy who i got them from put the wrong tire size on, i know that because Nissan told me, so i think what Tony said might have something to do with it also. Thanks alot hopefully more input for dampening will keep coming.

Do you guys know that besides dampening materials, those Lexus also have noise cancelling devices ? Basically the noise is transformed into voltages and these devices generates the voltage in opposite magnitude to cancel those noises. IIRC this is the Correlation theorem taught in one of the EE classes. So no matter how much dampening materials you put in the Maxima, it's never gonna be as quiet as a Lexus.

bsetiawan, if you look at what i originally wrote, i am not trying to get it to sound like a lexus because i know that i didnt pay 50g for my car, but i do remember when it did sound quieter in the car than it does now. But that noise canceling stuff is interesting. I didnt know about that.

Even if there is no gap with the dolar bill test, I guess the rubber seals and other insulating materials on the Maxima degrade over time because of weathering. It may be possible to make your Maxima as quiet as before by replacing all those rubber seals.
bsetiawan, actually this is off topic myself but i am really interested, do you know of a site that might have more information on these devices?
Where can i get new rubber seals?
thanks alot guys

i have a 2k3 and my rear passenger window is just whack.... its making this low whistling noise..... i overheard someone actually used double sided 3m tape to fix the problem.... who was that again?
did anyone attemp to fix this problem besides bringin this to the customer service rep who pretends not to know anything?

I used 3m velcro, there are 2 parts, the cloth one and then the hard part. I took about 2 inches of the cloth side and put it inside like the tsb says. I didnt see a change, so i guess that it didnt work or i have road noise coming from somewhere else.
