backspacing for 8.5 wides

I am geting some 20 x 8.5 inch wheels next month. What would be the best backspacing? I was thinking 40mm. I see some people have 35. I want them to go near the edge but not right to the edge. I plan on lowering it at the same time. What about 45mm is too far inside? I will not be changing the rotors but these wheels are thick so not much rotor to see anyway.
thanks

While I have never heard of "offset" referred to as "backspacing", I can tell you that 35 would be perfect.

Edit: By "perfect", I mean you won't have rubbing issues, not "perfect" in the sense that I think it will look remotely good.

Anywhere between 35-40 "backspacing" is good to go.

I have 18x8.5 with a +37 backspacing. I have 245/40/18 and on the rear I had to roll the fender ever so slightly. It's odd though, some people have 9" wide wheels and they seem to fit while my 8.5's rubbed in the rear.

FYI - backspacing is more what the domestic people use. Import people use the term offset. Same thing, just two different camps.

I am correct in assuming that 40 mm offset will move the wheels in slightly compared to 35. 0 offset means that there is 4.25 inches either side. In other words where the wheels is bolted on is exactly halfway of the rim width. Positve offset moves the wheels inward a bit from center. THerefore the larger the positive number the more in they would be and the smaller the positive number or if it a negative number, the more they will stick outside the fender correct??
