Car wont Start!!!!

My brother purchased a 2000 Maxima with 74,000 about 3 weeks ago. Toady he goes to start it and it wont start. Battery is fine, (Lights work, gauges go up). When I went to start it starts to turn over (mostly alternator sounds that I hear) but wont completely turn over. The gauges drop down. Alternator sounds sluggish (if thats the right way to describe it).

I know this is a very vague discription, but does anyone have a diagnosis? I will obviously be getting this stuff fixed for free because it is under a month, I just want to make sure all problems get fixed. (I dont want the salesman screwing with me because I found a few things wrong with before he (my bro) bought it that I made him (salesman) fix (new pads all around, rotors all around, and 2 new back calipers that were seized) and still got the car $1300 under blue book. So I dont think the salesman really likes me right now). In put is appreciated. Thanks

-Steve

Just because the lights work doesn't mean the battery has enough power to start the car. Try jumping it off...

regardless, i think its the starter.
try and jumpstart the car. if it starts disconnect the battery. if the car dies its a bad alternator. if it keeps running then the alternator is fine.
if it wont start at all then it isnt a power issue. you have power but the car cant use the power to start meaning its a bad starter.
if the dealership will fix it just take it there and let them do it.

I tried jumping it and nothing. So it sounds like its the starter by your opinions. Thanks alot for the help and the rapid responses.

So the starter it is. thanks to all those who replied. My bro will be getting a new starter for free. Good thing it happened with in the month warranty or they would've had a broken starter thrown through thier windows. ( I really didnt like this salesman.... can you tell?)

Try one more thing, this happened to me recently. The engine may be flooded. Hold down the accelerator firmly when you start the car.
