at and powersteering fluids

my car has 80k miles on it. i took it to the dealer today to have it looked it (inspection). they said my brakes needed work done, fuel injectors needed to be cleaned, AT and powersteering fluid needs to be flushed and replaced and my drive belts are nearly worn out. total cost came to $800. i only had the brakes and belts fixed ($300). how serious are the fluids? can i get that fixed at autozone? Thanks

i am pretty sure autozone does not do repair work at least around me they dont. having good fluid is important for both transmission and power steering. if nothing else, at least have a drain and refill done on the transmission which normally runs around 40-50 bucks. the power steering must be flushed but would you rather pay for a flush or replacing components in the steering or replacing the tranny? as for the injectors, pick up a bottle of chevron techron fuel system cleaner or BG44K. chevron you can get at advance auto or pep boys and BG44K can get had at just about any auto dealer. run either one in a full tank of gas and you should be alright.

Just do it your self. The powersteering and AT use the same fluid (check the PS cap to ensure your max is the same).

You can drain the tranny fluid and fill through the drain plug and refil. If you want to go one more, drop the pan and clean (instal a new gasket) and fill.

For the PS use a turkey baster and drain the PS jug and refil with fresh fluid. I do this on a regular basis.

This can same you $$ over the years, good luck.

the flushes will cost me a total of $250. they are also going to do a "fuel induction service" on the car. will the bg44k accomplish the samething?

the fuel cleaning they do may go a step further but you will not a difference between that and the bg. a tranny drain and refill is very easy to do since there is no filter to change. if you do not have the time or desire then the dealer can do a drain and refill too but they will always push the flush since it has more profit but its your call. at 80k, if it has not been done then i would get it flushed. as for the ps, you can use the turkey baster method but my problem is that i cannot find a baster small enough. skip the fuel system service and just buy the bg or chevron.

yeah, they are right down the road from me. i am over in the ballantyne area. i have never used them for service as i have been partial to independence nissan since i got my car there and they have never denied any tsb or warranty work. a couple of members have had trouble with superior but its good to hear that did what they were supposed to do in your case. the max-thanks for the tip, i never thought of that.
