New Clutch

Hey guys and gals. I have 2 questions. First off what clutch to get. I have a 2k SE, with 35k miles on it and its slipping. Car is driven very hard, has POP intake, catback, and Ypipe as far as bolt on stuff goes. Any opinions on Center Force vs ACT I or II or anything else to look for? Second question. Anyone change their own clutch? IF you have, how much stuff is involved. I've done clutches on the old Datsun Fairlady roadsters where you have to yank the engine, but they arent terribly complex. Do I need to pull out half shafts etc?

Thanks!

I had bad experience w/ ACTs so I stay away from them. I've used Clutchmaster clutch and no problems. Centerforce clutch is good too. If I had to choose between Centerforce and ACT, I would get Centerforce clutch. Too much work for me to do it at home. Just pay someone to do it for ya.

Car and driver actually burned theirs out at 40K on long term test.

Maybe just because of how high the engagment point is?

hmm I'm at 50K hope mine doesn't go anytime soon. The clutch on my acura made it to about 160,000 and my honda was still good at 140,000+ when I got rid of it.

I'm on my 2nd ACT at 80K miles. I was teaching my ex-fiancee how to drive a stick, and she roasted my stock clutch at 37K miles. I got an ACT, and when my 4th gear blew out, I put in a Fidanza and a new ACT since I already had the trans out to rebuild it. I love ACT clutches, never had a problem with any ACT clutch on any car I owned. Clutchmasters has a terrrrrible opinion with the SR20 FWD community. We have our own name for them as Clutchbastards. Y2K Max Luv got an ACT and Unorthodox flywheel put in by me yesterday he can comment on engagement and overall feel. Too bad his PhantomGrip didn't fit.

I drive a short commute every day. Then on weekends I hammer up twisty roads in the late afternoon. Around here though its a lot of puttering around in downtown traffic. To put things in perspective. I'm half way through the Falken Azenis Sport tires I put on 3700 miles ago. They are the third set of tires on the car. I do not do any burnouts. 4th set of front brake pads, and 3rd set of rotors (cracked both stillen x drilled and factory on the outside). Its not suprising that the clutch didnt last.

I got about 15K miles on my rear Azenis, and fronts lasted me like 3 months.... I need to get new ones as these cheapo winter tires I got- Bridgestone Turanzas have no traction in 1st gear, plus they are not as wide as my Azenis in the rear- but I got them for free so I installed them for the winter. Azeins in the snow is like death waiting to happen.

Does anyone make an aftermarket clutch for 3.5L yet?

Jim Wolf does, I belive 350Z shares the clutch with the Max/Altima. This should give the 3.5Ls more options as far as clutches go since the fake "Z-car" has more attention to it lately than almost any other car on the market when it comes down to aftermarket performance parts.

Good source for changing a clutch yourself...

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/801

Also, get a Hayes manual for your car, they give step by steps and pictures. My 2K max has 85K on it and the clutch is sparatically showing signs of wear. So I've started researching how to fix it. You may also want to use a transmission jack adapter (http://www.hand-tools-power-tools.co...ssion_jack.htm) to help you remove your tranny if you do it yourself. You'll still need a second jack (without an adapter) with a flat piece of wood to support your engine while you remove your tranny. Anyway the link above will give you a lot more info.
