2k1 Fuel Filter

Im wanting to replace my Fuel Filter (im at 55k miles). After going to the parts store im finding out that the filter is in the fuel tank. I looked into the manual - the repair manual and could not find any mention of replacing the filter. So where do you get the new filter from, Nissan? or do you have to clean the filter?

Yup, from Nissan, and no you can't clean the filter. Contact DAVEB at South Point Nissan (his info's in the stickies). It's about $26 or so shipped for the filter (Fuel Strainer Assembly) and a new O-ring for the fuel tank lip.

There's a visual HOWTO I created a while ago, can't get the exact URL since search is messed up (even for donating users), but if someone has a link to it please post it... Bottom line is, be VERY careful during the whole procedure, and you're also gonna get a lot of gasoline everywhere while you're disassembling the fuel assembly, and be VERY careful with the fuel lines inside the fuel assembly; I snapped one while trying to get the fuel filter to sit right :

IMHO it's worth it though, at 50K miles I noticed a significant difference...

Apparently Nissan doesnt think that the fuel filter will need to be replaced on any regular basis. And this seems right to me. My 95 max went 220,000 miles before i replaced the fuel filter in it, and if i could go back in time, i wouldn't have replaced it. Supossedly they should last as long as the fuel pump.

I call on that... it may last that long, but the car sure won't be running at its peak.

You change your air filter, I hope, right?
You change your oil filter, I hope, right?

So why is a FF any different? What technology is in a FF that cant be delivered in an oil filter or air filter?

so if you want your car to be in peak condition why dont u just change the whole engine every 50k...
some people just go too far to keep their cars in "peak" condition ...

Perhaps, but waiting 220K miles to change your fuel filter is definitely on the far opposite extreme of this line of thought.

Car never pulled harder and ran better in it's life than it did before the FF was changed. I saw no change between before and after the filter was changed.

All i'm saying is there's a reason nissan decided it didnt need to be replaced often and moved it to the tank. I can see their reason. Maybe others can't
There were and still are a lot of people who can't understand that spark plugs can last 100,000 miles and those who still claim that you should still replace them every 30K-60K. Now obviously there's not really any harm in replacing your Fuel filter whenver the heck you want, but to claim that you're smarter than Nissan engineers when it comes to their fuel filters seems a bit far fetched to me.

wow, mebby the gasoline nissan used at their RnD department was super purified, and from an ultra clean tank. It just makes sense, a filter is something that filters out crap....of course if theres no crap to filter out it would be okay. But if theres crap, especially 220,000 miles of crap where does it go? Answer me that plz.

I hear ya, and I'm pretty sure there were good motivations for putting it in the tank (the fuel lines should never get dirty, for one thing!), but I'm just explaining what I observed. I have no idea what kind of gas the previous owner used, and the car wasn't driven too much (26K miles in 3 years... I've put on more than that in the past 9 months alone already), but I was never able to hop my front wheels without trying REALLY hard before I changed the fuel filter. Afterwards it's like I can't keep the front-end from losing its traction
