key without chip starting question
The question is actually about a 99 but since all the cars in this forum have the chip in the key i'm asking the quesiton here too.
A friend just bought a 99 SE-L got some keys made at local hardware store. Tried to start the car this morning with the new (chipless) keys since she had misplaced the original and needless to say it wouldnt start.
I am being told that the car will no longer start for any key now at this point (even if she finds her original) because a security feature has been activated.
Want to know if this is so. And if we can do anything besides tow it to the dealership.
Thanks

If it's the SAME procedure as a 2K-2K1 try this:

If the ignition key is in the "ON" position and the security intdicator LED(on the clock) is ON(doesn't blink), the NVIS is triggered by one of numerous possiblities but it's probably the chip in the key.
There is TWO possible solutions:
1)Try to escape from LOCK MODE(Happens if you try to start the car a few times without the chip talking to the ECU).
a.Turn ignition switch to "OFF".
b.Turn ignition switch to "ON" with WORKING key.(Do NOT start engine.) Wait 5 seconds.
c.Return key to "OFF".
d.Repeat steps b and c TWICE(total of three cycles).
e.Start the engine.
2)If 1) didn't work it MUST be towed into Nissan to have ALL the keys wiped and reprogrammed with the ECU.
