I was under my max's hood just before, to clean it up and what not. And I noticed that on the right side, the black box, which i assume is the air box because it looks like where an intake would go (im not that smart when it comes to stuff under the hood), the box was unlatched on both sides, probably the dealer's doing, so curiously i took the piece out and there was a filter inside. Now Im pretty sure its not the incabin filter because obviously..thats in the cabin, but what filter is this? Does it have to be changed regularly? Sorry for the stupid quesiton but im just curious..

That would be your intake air filter.

Is it a paper filter? If it is then just replace it when it looks dirty... Maybe every 10k miles.

because they are lifetime filters.
you just need to clean and re-oil every 10K miles

Cone Filters? Aftermarket filters, usually cotton fibers instead of paper, tend to last longer and filter better. You still have to clean them though.

You don't need to change them. You can clean them using K&N filter cleaning kit; that's if you got K&N filter cone.

Mine had a black spot on it so you can flip it around and get some more use before you replace it. Or by a lifetime one that you clean.(K&N)
