How to Remove MAF?

OK, I've read through the threads and everyone makes it sound so easy to replace the MAF. On my 2K it looks like it's impossible to remove the lower 2 bolts holding the MAF to the filter housing. There's no way to get a wrench or socket underneath. So do you need to remove the entire filter housing first and then remove the MAF? Hard to believe it can all be done in 10 minutes. Thanks for your help.

Are you trying to remove the whole tube or just the sensor? All you need for the sensor is a torx style screw driver and it comes right out the top.

The new part I have has the tube with the sensor in it so I'd like to replace the assembly. It may be easier to remove the sensor from the new one and put it in the old assembly.

You dont need the tube, just replace the actual sensor.

The easiest way to do that is to pretty much remove the whole airbox. You'll probably have to take the accordian-like tube off the throttle body.

Just finished taking out the sensor and leaving the original tube. Easier said than done. First trick is to find the specialized driver head to remove the OEM screws (the newer ones can use a standatd T20 driver). After trips to 2 stores I found one - its called a security T20 head. Then the sensor didn't want to come out very easier. Took some twisting and pulling for a few minutes but finally popped out. I would have saved some time taking out the airbox but next time it will be quicker. Car idles much better and pickup is better too. Am testing MPG now. Thanks for all your help.

yep, I bought a set of tamper-proof Torx bits from Advance Auto for $10... the T-20 tamper-proof Torx bit worked with mine (took it out for cleaning)

If you want to replace the whole MAF assy, you will need to remove some of the bolts connecting the air intake assy so that you can wiggle it around. You don't have to remove the whole thing. It definitely takes a little longer. If you are only going to replace the sensor, then I would also suggest cleaning the screen in the MAF assy. This can be accessed by removing the air filter.

I replaced the whole MAF assy a few days ago. It was kind of a pain, but the screen in the original was pretty dirty.
