service engine code 0420

I am getting a 0420 code on my 2000 i30t. The guys at autozone said it was some kind of oxygen sensor or something. I was going to take my care to infiniti , but was wondering if I could fix this 0420 code problem myself. Anyone know how or what this is, and if its fixable by me, instead of infiniti high labor costs?

I have the same code. I'm bringing it to the dealer. It's under warranty so I'm not even gonna bother doing it myself. If yours is under warranty why are you worried about labor costs?

I was the lucky recipient of an SES light about two weeks ago.

The dealer said it was an oxygen sensor, I don't know what the code number was.

Anyway, they replaced it and performed a tune on my engine since I just hit the 106,000 Miles.

Guess what? the SES light came back on. So they checked it a second time and said that I needed a cat-convertor.

I order a Random Tech from Stillen and replaced it over the weekend. The dealer wanted $800.00, but I just couldn't see myself paying that much.

My bill was $ 209.00. James was great, one small issue however, the install kit doesn't have the proper bolts, washers or nuts, they seemed small in diameter. I had to go and buy larger ones.

I will take it to the dealer and get the code clear this week. And just hope that new ones don't manifest any time soon.

It seems to me that everytime I take my car to the dealer, more and more problems surface????

I'll keep you all posted.
P.S. Freakin autozone refuses to read error codes in California, has anyone else experienced the same thing???

420 is cat inefficiency code. O2 sensor has nothing to do with it. Time for a new cat although before you do that may want to pull out the secondary O2 and clean it with a rag and see if you get the code again. I've seen contamination get those things to trigger especially if you have removed it before.

I dont know where these things are located. Where are these things located? I havent touched the things. Is this bad? I only have 53000 miles, and I just bought the car. I dont know, if its a sensor I can understand, but if its somthing that costs a good buck for labor then I am wondering if I bought a lemon.

I mean , the car runs fine to me, I dont know what a car with a bad cat feels like or what can happen if you dont service the engine ASAP?

Cat efficiency code will clear on its own if the conditions are OK for a cetrain amount of time (I think it might actually be during restarts of the engine). OTOH, in order to throw a code (MIL light), the conditions must be met for a certain period of time.

There's an O2 sensor behind the cat. The ECU wants to see a certain differential between its reading and the readings from the other O2 sensor(s) that are upstream (before the cat) near the exhaust manifolds. That will provide some indication as to the effeciency of the cat. Since this condition will naturally vary, the ECU must see a problem for a period of time before it will throw a code. The ECU will clear the code if things are OK for a period of time.

More than likely you need a new cat. The light will probably come back on. Do you do a lot of short distance driving? That can make a cat prematurely fail. Also, leaded gas will take out a cat really quick.

Hope the helps.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I do short distance driving, but I dont understand how that will destory something in my car...

I only use 93 octane gas. Thats the highest octane gas in NY. I dont know what to do now. My car runs silent and fine. there is no noises or problems other then the Service engine light. It was on for about 4 days this light, and now its off. It came on out of nowhere and now its gone, out of nowhere, on the day I was going to bring my car in. How can I bring my car in if the light isnt on anymore.

Also, if this is a quirky issue, and the light goes on and off, could it be that a sensor was dirty or something? I just dont understand, if somethings broken, it needs to be fixed. How can it be broken one minute and not the next?

this is a standard tsb for the vq30de-k engine. The p0420 code is listed under the nissanusa website as standard 5 yr/90k mile emissions warranty.

go to the dealer and have them download and update your ecu and the problem will go away. How do I know this? I've had this code come up on both my 2k1 auto and 2k1 5spd

This is the famous code that i 've seen posted and its happeend to me, i was worried about it when it came on and waited a long time to fix it but all u have to do is get the ecu updated/reseted at the dealer its free.. They do make u sign something if its not under warranty , its a $90 bucks charge to run the diagnostic, but ecu is covered under emissions warranty.. so u should get cleared of any charges. I had it reset right befored smog like 2 month ago and its been fine ever since.

edubz sunoco has 94 octane thats what i use or you can just add octane level raiser to your tank which can be bought from pepboys or wherever u get autoparts, and the code should be covered by warrenty.
just DONT GO TO KINGS INFINITI IN BROOKLYN THEY WILL **** YOU OVER, THEY ALWAYS FIND A WAY.
