I had an engine pinging noise and I brought my car to the dealer for check up, but they told me to use a better gas! I always use Super from Amoco or Mobil...and don't think it's connected to the gas issue..
Have anyone had the same problem? or it's really bad gas in New York?

I've had pinging on other Nissan cars(Sentras) and Chevron 92-octane reduced but did not eliminate the pinging. You might try running the tank almost empty and try filling it up with Chevron gas to see if it helps.

Dude - I have a 2kSE - You know how I finally fixed it? Took it in to Nissan three times and finally they figured out that three of the 6 coils above the spark plugs were bad. You have them fix that and you're running smooth. I've driven 5000 miles since the fix and not had one engine knock yet!

You need any help w/ the dealer let me know and I'll give you the info on my fix and who I dealt with.

A lot of people (myself included) had pinging problems with cone intakes. I haven't heard any pinging since I swapped the cone for OSCAI.

Re: Fix.

Could you give the information about the pinging engine noise fix, please?
I'd greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Cone intake:

This would replace your stock airbox so it sounds like this isn't what you're experiencing.

The saga continues (long) . . .

I continue to have a problem with pinging and, most recently, uneven acceleration. That's AFTER I removed my SI and installed the OSCAI. The damn thing is, it happens intermittently. I'm trying to pick up a pattern. It seems to occur shortly after I fully warm up the engine from a cold start. And I can feel it under both partial and wide-open throttle.

My car accelerated unevenly this morning as I was pulling onto the freeway. There's a long uphill ramp by my house that I usually take at WOT in 2nd gear just for laughs and giggles. Today, the car wouldn't pull properly. When I got off the freeway, I hit 2nd gear again. No detonation, but the engine started missing. At that point I headed for home, parked the car in my driveway, walked in the house, called the dealer, made arrangements to take my car in, walked out to the car, started it up again, and drove away. Lo and behold, the problem disappeared completely. No detonation, no uneven acceleration, no missing, no nothing!

Don't ask me why, but I decided to drive all the way to the dealership anyway. My Service Writer looked at me and asked me what I wanted him to do. I just stared at him like a dummy. What could I say? I couldn't duplicate the problem. I even drove the car around the block a few times and kept accelerating in 2nd gear at WOT between 2K and 3K rpm hoping I could get my engine to detonate. Not a chance!

I spoke to Dave Burnette at Southpoint Nissan this afternoon. He said he'd check around and see if any of his techs are aware of a detonation problem with 5th Gens. I also checked with jlcpgord and he said his detonation problem occurred with more regularity than mine. He was able to get his engine to detonate on cue in front of a Zone Rep. Nissan fixed his problem by replacing three of his ignition coils.

At this point, I'm seriously considering replacing my ignition coils in the hopes that that will fix the problem. On the other hand, I hate to pay for something that should be covered under my 100,000 mile extended warranty. (I've only got 12,000 miles on my car right now!) I'm just not sure what to do at this point.

Suggestions anybody?

Y2KSE, I feel for you. I've been battling pinging problems in my other vehicle('93 Nissan Sentra) for years. Its got to be the most annoying sound I've ever heard. The one consistent way to reproduce/encourage pinging is during a hot day, going up hill, with the A/C on, lugging the gear, and with some ADDED weight in the car. These conditions add to the load the car must overcome and always lead to pinging in my Sentra. Nissans' dumb solution is to retard the timing BEYOND factory tolerances to minimize pinging. However, this is a temporary fix that leads to other problems that I'm now starting to experience.

You might also be experiencing some pinging due to the misreadings of the 02-sensors, because of your modified catalytic converter. I'm not sure, but messing with the 02-sensor readings can lead to a rich or lean condition which can eventually lead to engine damage. I would try investigating all other avenues, but if nothing else works try replacing the stock cat to see what happens. Also, try Chevron 92-octane or higher fuel. It helped reduce my pinging. My next attempt at a fix will be some Redline Water Wetter to hopefully decrease cylinder head temperatures. Good luck!
