Is it the trannies or the ATF?

Man, after two drain and fill of my '02 Maxima's tranny with Mobil 1 ATF (one at 14k and another one juat last Saturday, at 22k), it is shifting better than ever. Since new I always disliked the shifting and it even felt like it was slipping. This makes me wonder if the problem with our trannies is that they are tough on the ATF and that Nissan's D4 ATF is not up to the task.

I'm just glad I decided to do this early and not follow Nissan's recommended change interval for the ATF.

What you guys think?

Good to hear it, did you drop the pan at all or did u just do a drain and fill like you stated?

No, I have not dropped the pan yet but I think it would have probably been better to do so, just to see how much metal or other materials were cummulated in the magnet and the pan itself.

Interestingly enough, browsing the OdyClub forum (wife drives a '03 Odyssey), I found that Honda is recalling their 5-speed auto trannies.

"The situation is created by insufficient lubrication of the transmission's secondary shaft second gear that can occur under certain driving conditions. Prolonged operation under these conditions can lead to heat build-up and under certain circumstances may eventually result in chipped or broken gear teeth or breakage of the gear."

"In most cases, the repair involves a simple gear inspection, which is accomplished without removing or disassembling the transmission, and a modification to increase the flow of transmission fluid to the affected gear."
