Under Drive Pulley Question
Under Drive Pulley Question
Hey guys im thinking of putting an underdrive pulley on my 01 Max Se 5spd....Are they worth it...will i notice a difference in 1/4 mile and on street?? and what kind should i get and will it hurt anything thanks for any help TIm

It helps at the low end. I have much better pull off the line.
Once the car gets up to speed, there is not much difference.
I would reccommend.
I think what he means is....."with everything that has an advantage come some kind of disadvantage, in theory. What are the advantages and disadvantages of an UDP, and which is the best one."
well thing again about it .Check this site and read every thing .

So its good and bad on the other hand. And you ask what kind are they(there is 15% 20% 25% 30%).

Well i read that info( thanks bye the way) and i dont have a big stereo only 3 tvs but there hardly on.....so im thinking ill try it what should i get the 15% or the 20% thanks Tim
I have the Unorthodox UDP. Worked fine, no problems at all. Also have 2 subs in the back, RMS power around 350 watts (I think, might be more). Never any problems with powering them, even while running the AC in the summer. Also its great to get rid of the AC lag!!! Engine revs up more easily while using the AC
I got an Unorthodox UD pulley and I installed it along with my Fidanza flywheel so I can't tell ya if there is any gain from it.... but I can tell ya with both the car rocks, it revs up like crazy. Also I can't even tell my AC is on, sounds stupid but I think it even runs better with the AC on at some times ! ECU advances the timing when the AC is kicked on to compensate for some of that compressor drag. I've watched it on my scanner... base timing goes up a little.
thats what i was thinking 20%.....hey another question what are some mods that i can do to this to gain horsepower and improve my quarter mile...my buddy has an M3 and im trying to keep up with him....i have a frankencar intake...and ill do the pulley...what else is there that i can do...i dont want to touch the exhaust and a supercharger is way to much..thanks guys

I have the UR pulley and have no problems using the AC with the stock stereo.
I would not trust my car to any other pulleys as some have had problems and damaged others cars.
I agree about the wheels, they look heavy, but you might get a little improvement in the low end that your lost with the heavy wheels.

what year M3 ? Ditch the wheels for some light weight 17" Rota Subzeros or Volk TE37s :P Add a set of HS headers, remove main cat using a test pipe, repleace the midpipe with a cattman unit and use the stock rear muffler section. Throw on a UD pulley, Place Racing cold air, do a ECU timing advance at the dealer- ask for one of the techs if U can ask them a question... then ask them if for like 20 bux they wanna advance your ignition timing via the Consult by 2 degrees, U will have to use Premium gas -93 is best if U live in the midwest. If your 5spd this should pretty much make ur car as fast as a M3. If both of you are autos then M3 will own ya off the line cause I6s tend to produce alot of low end torque. I driven all kinds of M3s and I'm not a huge fan of them. Stock clutch will slip if driven aggressively, and head gaskets like to blow out alot also. Overall in the long run, Maxima will last alot longer and have far less mechanical problems. Plus BMW parts tend to be on a expensive side vs Nissan's. If your friend owns a current generation M3, then U need a turbo or a blower to keep up . No naturally aspirated Maxima will keep up with the new M3.
it will be a drivers race if the M3 is stock vs moded Maxima. Reason M3s are good off the line is cause of their gearing. 5spd Maxima has very long gears compared to other cars. Should pull on him on the highway with no problem thou. I spanked a new M3 in my G20 week ago. Driver was ****ed but then asked me if I was NOS, I laughed and told him its a slightly modified SR20DET engine that comes stock with the car ( in JAPAN- but he don't need to know dat). Within a week the little red box walked a auto LS1 Vette like crazy, LS1 Camaro 6spd, EVO, new M3, old M3 and 2 Maximas. My Maxima is just my daily driver, I have other faster cheaper, more reliable cars

Save your money..the udp is not worth the cost not the install. I have run at the track with the udp both installed and removed and I can tell you it will not make a difference. For almost the same price you can get a y-pipe and that will yield MUCH better gains

It was a waste of my money too. 14.4@98mph with the UDP and 14.4@98mph without the UDP. Also, the UDP introduced some grainy vibrations at both idle and throughout the rev range. The more I learned about UDPs, the more I've become convinced they don't do squat. For one thing, the stock VQ pulley has an elastomer ring sandwiched inside the pulley which is actually two piece pulley. This ring acts a torsional crank dampener. The UDP doesn't have this ring therefore more vibration is introduced. This vibration is more apparant on the smoother running 3.0 VQs than the 3.5 VQs. The VQ motor is a very stout powerplant and I don't think an UDP could cause a major failure like a broken crank, but the UDP can cause valvetrain timing problems due to the vibration of the crank and pistons. This can ultimately hurt power. If you really want to gain power, add a HEAVIER dampener. F1, stock car, drag cars, and most other race cars run rather heavy "fluid" dampeners that make the crank perfectly balanced which in turn improves valvetrain operation and gains power. You'll never see UDPs on these race cars.
Pulley on the 02-03 is a single peice with no dampener. I paid $110 total (UR is a rip off) for my UDP/belts/install... what does a y-pipe cost? What about all the dyno proven gains? Drag times are subject to many many variables. It is estimated that 10hp will drop 0.1 off your ET. UDPs give realistically up to 5wtq gain throughout the rpm range with a 6.5hp peak on the 3.5 max. You will not see a change in tenths of a second with the UDP, more like 0.05... it is not a major mod. Where did you get this stuff about heavier being better? I have had my pulley for about a couple thousand miles now and I have seen no vibration or odd noises.

Here's a pic of a failed ring on a VQ:

Since I many will not read the link, here's what they found out using the ATI Super Damper:
As RDI's Preston Miller points out, the ATI Super Damper is the overwhelming favorite among WC and BGN engine builders. Having a damper that really cracks down on torsional vibrations not only significantly extends crank life, but also adds power.
At first it may seem an unlikely piece of go faster equipment, but an effective crank damper cuts the amount of torsional vibration transmitted to the camshaft. In so doing it allows the cam to much more nearly deliver the intended lift/duration characteristics to the valvetrain. Forget light when it comes to dampers. Even for a drag racer, where acceleration is all that matters, a functional damper will out perform a light, non-functional one every time.
So how much power can a damper be worth? Forget about hearsay and some of the opinions of even well-known racers. Testing on my own dyno on a nominally 400hp motor showed a good damper was worth 5 hp over a typical factory damper (which was designed for the stock bottom end not a modified one) and over 11 hp over that delivered by a lightweight hub.
I can provide a ton more info if you still don't believe me.
I will check mine out when I get over to my parents house next time. I am fairly certain that 95 crank pulley =/= 02/03 crank pulley.
That article you posted is effectively saying that we should see less power with a UDP which is not true. There is obviously something entirely different going on there. Please provide more info.

As taken from Greg's 2k2 webiste, here's proof that the stock 2k2+ pulley does indeed have the same rubber ring as the 3.0 VQ. Oddly, Greg says there is no such ring even though the pic clearly shows the black 1/8" rubber ring ~.5" inside from the outside lip of the pulley. I think Greg needs to get his eyes checked
