Tape over lights?

Not only chipped, if god forbid the headlight ever shattered, the tape will keep the glass in tact. its sort of like when you tape up your windows when you know you may get hit by a bad storm. If any debree shatters the window, you know the tape should at lest keep in tact instead of having glass everywhere!.
Keep tires from getting blown and is just plain smart to do when you go to the track.

True, most modern cars have plast beizels to protect the lights. But cars early 90's and older had glass for there headlights.
