Fuel Filter - Relocation

Would it be possible to relocate the fuel filter to a more convenient location? I was thinking of removing the fuel filter from the pump assembly, then use a universal fuel filter from PepBoys attached to the line somewhere under the vehicle.

Will the pump function with no filter in place?

I would not recommend redesigning the system because of fire concerns. The pump would probably function for a short period until it gets gunked up.

Ok, how about adding an additional in-line fuel filter? The only concern is that it would decrease fuel pressure....?

If you feel like splicing into the fuel line and finding a suitable place to mount it, by all means. I don't know what kind of effect it would have on the fuel pump pressure. I would personally not want to venture into that arena.

don't do it man.....nothing is more dangerous in your ride than some kind of fuel leak, issue, etc.....that's the one part of the car that you don't wanna mess with unless you know EXACTLY what you're doing (which it doesnt' seem like)...

4th gen has the fuel filter under the hood. you can do the same on your 5th gen but you have to find a place to secure the new filter.

I do not see any benefit in doing so which outweighs the costs and risks.

IMHO, from a theoretical perspective, the fuel tank is the best place for the fuel filter. Why? It keeps the fuel lines clean! So everything is clean, minus the fuel pump, which BTW still pumps dirty fuel (the fuel filter is technically downstream from the pump).

So save yourself some headache and don't mess with the fuel system like that. You don't want to bust a fuel line and have all your gasoline dump out like the DeLorean in Back to the Future part 3

The fuel pump has the sock filter just like the ones on GM in tank fuel pumps. The main filter is for sending cleaner fuel to the injectors.
