Looking for a roof rack for my 2k SE max. I just purchased a new surfboard (longboard) and it's too long to fit through my trunk like my old shortboard. I really have no idea about how roof racks work, so I was hoping some people here could give some recommendations about what exactly to buy, and from where.

Buy a Thule rack. Do not just get board pads and put it on the roof...get the whole kit with bars, etc. Yakima and Barrecrafters also make racks, but Thule is the best quality (believe me, I work at a ski shop and sell all of these brands). Also the Thule rack has a more precise fit to the car (I have a 2k max also) and is good for carrying boards, bikes, skis, 2-by-4's, etc....you should be able to get Thule at selected ski or bike shops.....

btw it's pronounced "TOOL-E" (Swedish) just so you don't sound stupid when you ask about them at a shop

 

I actually tried out a buddy's board pads and put it on to test them out and yes, they blow. I'm definitely going to be getting a rack like yours. I'll have to check out some bike shops around town to see it in person...but I'm coming up with around $200 online. That price sound about right?

yeah that's about right:
should be about $100 for the "feet"
about $40 for the bars
about $40 for the "fit kit" (specific to each car)
and you can get different kind of board racks from Thule for $20-50 that work well.

Also, I suggest you spend another $30 or so and buy a lock kit. The racks do not come with locks and you should get a lock set that will put a lock on each "foot" so nobody can steal your rack (I've seen it happen)...

and.....if you plan on leaving the rack on all the tiem like I do...but a fairing for the front - reduces wind noise...they run about 40 bucks. I am lame and custom-painted mine
