What is DATA DOT?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but i believe it is a plastic dot placed on your headlights with a serial number(VIN?) inside so if your headlights get stolen, and the thief gets caught, they can trace it back to your car. It is supposed to be a theft deterrent, but if they want em, they'll take em anyway. I believe the dots are part of the whole headlight security upgrade that includes some new bracketry.
This is correct. Well, this is what the dealer told me when i bought my car anyways.
