changed in-cabin air filter, now airbag light is on

All, any suggestion on how to get my airbag light on the dash from blinking? I changed out my in-cabin air filter and disconnected the airbag plug to get to it. I then turned on the ignition to test the airflow while the airbag plug was disconnected. Then I turned the ignition off, plugged in the airbag connector and now it won't stop blinking (on my dash).

Thanks,

Karl G.

Open the driver's door. Note the rubber covered button, a button which is
pressed by the door when the door is closed. This is the Driver's Door
Switch (DDS).

Turn the ignition from OFF to ON. Press the DDS at least 5 times within 7
seconds after turning the ignition switch ON. Turn the ignition OFF.
Close the driver's door. Start the engine.

Do what Bigdog said, and btw you are not suppose to disconnect the airbag adaptor during the process of changing the Microfilter. Just unclip the adaptor from the console. Let the adaptor hang and remove the console.

Guys, thanks for your suggestions and tips.

Well, I must've messed something up b/c BigDogJon's suggestion didn't work.....I've tried it about a dozen times. It's still blinking.

Is this a trouble code that AutoZone will clear for you? Maybe???

saxdogg,

Good question. I called a local dealer and he said to remove the battery cable and leave it off overnight. He said if that didn't work then he'd be able to fix it normally for $80 but for me $40.....which leads me to believe that he's just going to reset something which will take 2 minute's worth of work.

I'm going to try the "battery cable off" method and then if that doesn't work, I'll try BigDogJon and nismotech's method once again. If that still doesn't work then I'll take it to AutoZone as you suggest.

Thanks guys,
Karl

Yeah, don't pay $40. I'll look in my service manual tonight if you would like...

Where in FW are you?

JP,

I'd be forever in your debt if you wouldn't mind looking. I kept the batt cable off for a few hours to see if it helped but it didn't....the airbag light is still on and flashing.

I'm in Benbrook, southwest of FW off of Winscott Rd. Are you in the area?

I'll double-check the reset procedure the other guys are mentioning and try to report back tonight at home.

I'm in Weatherford, but work at UNT.

Did you unhook the airbag cord when changing the air filter? Double check to make sure the connection is tight.

Oh, cool! UNT has a nice campus. I'm a fan of Denton and watched a UNT/UL Lafayette basketball game there last year.

That's exactly what happened and what got me into this mess. I didn't know until after the fact that you don't have to disconnect the airbag connectors to get to the filter. I've unplugged and replugged it in about 5 different times to make sure that it was getting a good connection. The plug "clicks" into place so I'm sure that it's connected correctly at the plugs.

1. Ignition ON

2. After AIR BAG light is on for 7 seconds, turn off the ignition immediately!

3. Wait 3 seconds

Repeat the above three steps three more times

Turn ignition on again and it should have been reset.

Well, with the door closed I:

1. Turned the ignition on for 7 seconds while the airbag light was solid (not yet flashing) then turned the ignition off.
2. Waited 3 seconds with ignition off then turned the ignition back to "On" again for 7 seconds while the airbag light was solid (not yet flashing) and before it started flashing turned it "Off".
3. Waited 3 seconds with ignition off then turned the ignition back to "On" again for 7 seconds while the airbag light was solid and not yet flashing and before it started flashing turned the ignition to "Off", waited 3 seconds, turned the ignition back to "On" again, the airbag light stayed on, then started flashing again and wouldn't go off.

<Sigh>

Am I doing it wrong, Dan?

I do appreciate the help you and everyone has given me by the way.

By the way, I even took the glove box off to again check the airbag connection and it is firmly connected. There are no other wiring plugs that were disconnected along the airbag connector line either.

It looks like you did the steps right. Did you happen to use a watch/clock to time the seconds or did you just do the 'old "one mississippi" count? You only have one second between steps 1 and 2, i.e., you have to turn off the ignition switch at or before 8 seconds, each of the three times -- it's that critical.

BTW, I believe the above procedure will toggle between diagnostic and user modes. If you did the above steps correctly, perhaps doing it again will put the system back into the correct mode. Or, maybe something actually got hosed when you unplugged it. Was the battery still connected when you unplugged it?

I used the old "one Mississippi" count. I'll try it again using a stopwatch and get back to you.

Yes, the battery was connected when I unplugged it and I ran the blower motor for the A/C with the airbag connector unplugged.

I'll run outside and try the stopwatch method now. :-)

Hmmm...do you have an Autozone near by? They can reset the code. If it comes back on, there is something else amiss.

I don't think you can reset the SRS with an OBD-II scan tool. You either have to use a Consult or do it via the "manual" method.

Guys, it worked!!!! You definitely have to be within a second of the count or forget it. The airbag light blinked slowly compared to the normal quicker blink so then I thought "oh crud". But then I turned the ignition off waited a couple of seconds then turned it on again (started it) and it's no longer on or blinking!!

Thanks for everyone's help, remember that on for 7 seconds, off for 3 seconds repeat 3 times rule. It works!

Glad you were able to fix it without spending $$$.

BTW, here's another thread from last year that describes the sequence in detail. It's a good one to bookmark...

airbag circuits

BTW, the airbag controller has a reserve power supply that you have to discharge before breaking any connections. To prevent a fault light, you must first disconnect the battery and then wait > 3 minutes before disconnecting any of the airbag wiring. (I haven't personally verified this but that is what it says in the service manual.)

Airbag-related connectors are colored yellow.

Excellent!! Thanks, guys for all of your help and advice! I bookmarked the link and have noted to disconnect the battery and wait >3 minutes before disconnecting any airbag wiring. Hopefully, I won't touch any airbag connector again!
