What can cause very low miles per gallon?

Hi I have a 2k max and I've noticed that in the past month I'm getting very low mileage per tank. Right now I have a bit less than a quarter of the tank left and I have gone only 164 miles. I don't drive really aggressively and even though its mainly city streets I should get a lot more than that right? What can be causing this problem?

O2 sensors, bad gas, dirty air filter, underinflated tires, excessive lead in your right foot, clogged exhaust, fouled spark plugs, etc, etc, etc...

Throw some BG44k in the tank. That will clean out the injectors. Sounds like you need to do a big tune up. Are you getting any CELs?

I have been trying to dianose that also, i get the EXACT same milage. I have tried fuel injector cleaner, had an oilchange done 1000 miles early and made sure the tire inflation is exact. I have had to replace 1 o2 sensor, and dont know what else. I got a new air filter i guess having 56k miles is a sign to get new spark plugs?... Good luck finding an answer shabzone

Driving style won't equate to 164 miles on 3/4 of a tank. I just filled up my tank today and I fill it up about where your at and I'm at 330 miles. That only get me to about 22-23 miles per gallon and your just over 10MPG. My Jeep gets better mileage then that.

I'd look real hard at you injectors, spark plugs, air filter, and MAF. If I had to guess I'd say injectors.

hahahaz......when i get to where you're at i get about 160miles.......been burning gas like crazy.....i definitely need a tune-up but too lazy and no money. I was thinking of selling the maxima and possibly adding a few grands for the Scion TC. Don't know if that's a smart move. =/

edit: no check engine lights

BTW my car has just 27k miles on it.. Is it possible for so many things to be messed up already?

If you like driving like a snail, sure. The extra couple of grand you add to the Scion will cancel out if you keep the Maxima, since it'll eventually be used for gas anyways.

Don't get a Scion - they're such terrible cars.

27k hmmmm Just change out your air filter and pour some fuel injector cleaner. If that doesn't work take it to the dealer.

City driving really kills the gas milage.
When i drive in NYC i usually get around 12 to 15mpg. Then i went upstate and found out i was getting around 29 to 32mpg. Considering that you have such low miles on your car i would first check the tire pressure and if thats not the case and you dont have any codes then im not really sure.

The A/C compressor is running all the time if you leave the auto climate control on. Couple that with city driving and your mileage goes down hill fast.
