Smelly stuff.....

Bad eggy smells from your exhaust are typically caused by the sulphur in the gasoline you're using. Some gas has more suplhur in it then others so try switching brands.

Aah....you're from Canada

Empz,

I see you live in Ontario. There was an article in the Toronto Star Wheels section a couple of weeks ago about the high levels of sulphur in Canadian gas and the smelly results. Ontario gas is particularly stinky. Its bad for the environment but I don't think its doing your car any harm.

I seem to recall catching Car Talk on Public Radio a few weeks ago, and this woman called in about the same prob with her new car (can't recall what kind of car but don't think it was a Max). Anyway, they told her that this would probably work it's way out of the system over a little time. Bottom line: They didn't seem like it was a big deal to worry about. Unfortunately, I can't recall the whole story but you may want to search their site at:

www.cartalk.org

Good luck.

Bad cat converter. I forgot the exact chemical reason but parts of the cat converter stop breaking down exhaust gases or the interior of the cat converter becomes caked with carbon residue. I could do some more research on it if necessary.

I don't have any problems running Shell Gold (it just sounds better), 500KM east of you.

It sounds like a funky catalytic to me.

I may be taking a run down the 'Highway to Hell' next week and I can certainly tell you if I am having ghe same problem.

Don't even get me started about sunoco or shell.... cuz my max isn't seeing either of those brands for the remainder of it's life...

Anywayz, is it possible that this smell could be coming from some funky mold in your HVAC??? (you know, before we go accusing the engine)

Just a Catalytic Converter

The rotten egg smell comes from the catalytic converter.
I had it in my old car and i changed my cat since i thought it was bad, but i smelled it even with the new one, just a lot less. Then i heard it's totally normal if the cat gives off this smell, but then again, i'm not sure.
peace

just try switcing brands....

contrary to what others say this is a GAS related problem and its common in Canada. just try switching brands. isn't that easier than changing your cat. converter?

This happened to my 3000GT. Especially after restarting it. The Mitsu dealer said that most cars have a zinc coating on their cats to prevent the smell, but Mitsu considers zinc a hazzardous material and will not use it on their cars.
ps I now drive a 2001 SE 20th ann addition

Usually that means the engine isn't running quite right or the cat isn't working quite right.
