Gen 5.5 Bose Stereo problems/replacement & out of warranty
Gen 5.5 Bose Stereo problems/replacement & out of warranty
1st off I know there is an Audio forum within this site, but I am specifically seeking Gen 5.5 owner input here.
I recently started having problems with my Bose (imagine that) in my '02. My symptoms are different from that I have read about. The prob only happens when in CD mode. Never radio or Cass.
The CDs when played arent clear. Muffled. And it does not seem to be left channel only. The CDs dont skip, they pause for a second or two. If you hit a good enough bump or corner really hard, the sound quality can clear up.
When it 1st started acting up (only about 1 month ago at 50K miles), I would eject the CD being played, reinsert it and all would be good. Now you cannot depend on that.
Solutions??
In another thread, a replacement stereo was suggested (for my needs being i do not want to replace the entire system) to be Eclipse brand. That it was compatible with our Bose equipment. But I talked to a local car stereo guru that used to sell Eclipse (and no longer does), because they skip alot and their compatibility with bose in his opinion was over rated, exaggerated, and basically sucked. His exact words.
Now, on eBay, I found a listing, that for $149 you can ship off these defective Bose head units to get repaired. Anyone seen or deal with this?

Has anyone PAID to have these repaired at Nissan or elsewhere? How long to get it back and how much?
OR- Has anyone left theirs alone and just put a CD changer in the back?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you

Just sent this following e-mail to "Funky Fresh":
"Hello,
Found your Funky Fresh website and decided to contact you.
I have a few questions.
I have a 2002 Maxima (which I LOVE), but the CD is messing up. It plays, and will "pause" (not skip) and it sounds muttled. I never get any errors or anything. It used to clear up when I would eject the CD and reinsert it. Now that doesn't do it anylonger. it is just constantly crappy sounding.
Nissan had a service announcement out on these, but mine never acted up, not until after warranty and 50K miles. They say there is a bad cable connection solder within the head unit. Crappy Clarion headunit, sorry, had to vent.
Can you fix this? How long till I get it back? How much? And is the work guaranteed? I have heard alot of horror stories from Max owners that sent theirs off (under warranty by Nissan) and they come back and need repaired again. UGH!
Also, do you have any repaired headunits for sale? Just so I could possibly buy one and not have a hole in my dash.
Thanks so much for your valued time."
Lets see what they have to say.

I have a an 03 that developed those same problems. Local Dealer replaced unit )virtually NO questions asked). Since your unit is out of warranty period...try this site

Definitely give CarStereoHelp.com a call. They are local to me, and I spoke to them on several occasions regarding the problems with the 02-03 HUs. They are an authorized Bose repair facility, as well as a facility that repairs out-of-warranty HUs for several Nissan dealers (both locally and nationwide).
