Programing a Transponder Key 2K Max?

I ordered one of these keys off ebay. I guess they are for the 2000-2001 Maxima. Was about $24 with shipping. I know there is a chip on the key, I also know that going to the dealer will be a fortune. Does anyone know approx. the price at the stealership? or anyother place where I can get it done, and how much.

I payed $45 at a local dealership to cut and program 2 keys.
They insisted they would not work. Said something special about the 2000. I pushed and they agreed to try it but that they would charge me either way. Tech was a real jerk about it. Anyway, they worked fine and the tech hid his face and wouldn't talk to me afterwards.

Another stealership quoated me $80.
I also found 2 locksmiths who said they could do it, but they wanted $40/key.
Moral? Shop around.

depending on where you go, its gonna be around $50 for programming. The price you paid for the key is also really good. The average price dealerships and locksmiths charge range from $45 to $80.

Remotes can be programmed by anyone. Keys have to be programmed with consultII or similar. Dealer and a few locksmiths are the only ones who can do it.

Also, if you get a remote start, your ONLY key would be installed in the car so the remote start could operate. This seems like a bad idea. Don't most remote starts still require that you put the key in to actually drive the car?

Instead of a dealer key, all you need is a key that goes in accesseri right? right? well i went ahead just as a experiment and got a key done at homedepot, it works fine on doors and trunk and cr goes in accessory but it wont start... with remote starter and home depot accessory key, it should work right right.. i maybe wrong, thats why i come to you people

The ECU stores the code of the transponder that is burried in the key. The code is put in the ECU when the ECU is programmed with the consultII and the key. If you try and start the car without sending the code to the ECU (no transponder key) the car will not start (security LED will stay lit when key is turned to on). Try to start the car too many times with a non programed key and the ECU will go to lock mode, meaning you will have to do some on off sequence even when you do get the programmed key to get it to start. It is a pretty secure system. Most remote starters I have looked at don't bypass the system they just put a key somewhere in the system to transmit the code when trying to start. One unit I saw didn't have a key in it but it had to be programmed into the ECU just like a key (trip to a dealer and $).

Try it again but make sure the original transponder key is no where near the car.

Also be sure that no one installed an aftermarket remote starter with a tranponder key embeded in it.
