"Engine Flush" @ 30K mi -- Necessary?

My dealership just called to tell me I'm overdue for my 30K mi service (33.5K mi) and that amont other things, I need an engine flush. He describes it as pressurizing the engine and getting all the minute particles out of the engine/pan etc....

Sounds like a load of cr@p to me. I know some of this stuff builds up in a pan over time, but w/ frequent oil changes and such, shouldn't this be a waste of $$?

it's really a buncha BS. there should be no reason that you are in "need" of it. some people do it as a precaution or just as a maintenance thing. me personally, i'm going to do the amsoil engine flush at my next oil change. supposedly doesnt' harm at all, doesn't contain any insane chemicals that can do any harm, and to me is considered a good maint. add-on to keep the engine running in tip top condition. and at only $5+shipping, it really doesn't hurt at all. there's another thread floating around here about it and seems like a good thing.

to make it short, dont' do it. it's a waste of money. if you feel the need to make sure the engine is in tip top condition, consider this and then run a fuel injector cleaner. with those 2, you should fine.

If the dealer uses the BG's product for the engine flush, then I would recommended (provide that you have extra cash in hand). If you religiously changed your oil at the right interval and used good motoroil (synthetic)...then you probably don't need the service, IMO.

well this brings up 2 things. is he asking whether the car needs the service or is he asking whether eh should take it to the dealer. why would he take it to the dealer to ahve them do BG on it if HE can do it and 1)save the trip and 2)save the money.

OT a bit but...

Doesn't Nissan have self cleaning fuel injectors? So why would we need to get them cleaned?

PoLo: "consider this and then run a fuel injector cleaner."

Thanks.

This service (engine flush) was independant of an injector cleaning (which was $60 and I allowed them to do, in addition to a throttle body cleaning at $40). They wanted $160 for the engine flush (oil flush it sounded like) and I passed on it.

I''ll also ask - What is BG?

All I ever did to my old car(95 altima 5sp) was change the oil ever 3K religiously. I drove the h*ll out of it for 8 years and 120,000 miles. At the time I traded it for my Max, it ran perfectly. All this talk about engine flushes and paying more for synthetic oil is a waste of money. The dealer is scaring you into thinking your engine needs cleaning and the oil companies are scaring you into thinking you need synthetic in these engines. You don't!

No, you don't need an engine flush, ever. The only case when that *might* be warranted is if you get a junker engine that has been sitting there for 4 years or if you haven't changed the oil for like 50k miles (at which case you will need that junker engine anyhow).

Anything that has the word "flush" in it, stay away from.

Gentlemen:

While I've never used synthetic oil in my vehicles I have also never "flushed" the oil system. Please see my signature I still drive the 91 when my son lets me. It has 180K and still runs strong. Just change your engine oil every 3 - 4K and you will never have a problem.

On another note .... the 03 is my first automatic and I had read in a number of threds where some guysw did a trany flush and noticed a performance difference ...... so when I brought my 03 in at 30K to replace the rear brake pads I turned down the $450 30K "service" and had the tranny flush done and I did notice a difference. The car shifts noticably crisper particularly in the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Thus I have now decided to do this tranny flush every 30K.

Peabody.

No. You should definitely continue to do those every 2 years or 30K miles, whichever comes first.

It is not a do-it-yourself if BG's products are being used. Here is the link FYI:

BG is BG44k, supposedly the best and only fuel injection cleaner (i think thats what it is) there is. A lot of .org members swear on this stuff.

BG products work.

BTW -- Have them change the dirty air in your tires, lube your muffler bearings, and top off your blinker fluid when you get your engine flushed.

Coolant flushes I like -- but not trans/engine flushes as there is a risk of damaging things when you try to force a particle of junk through our tightly toleranced VQs and trannies!

I had my trans fluid flushed out twice (50K now) and my trans shifts as smooth as when I first bought the car. I am not sure about the engine flush but with trans flush, all the machine does is it supplies fresh fluids while the car is running...and flush out the old oil. Definately no harm whatsoever to the transmission!

The transmission has a fluid recirculating pump so it moves fluid about whenever the engine is running. You can do the 'flush' yourself, but it's messy. Don't assume it's the same thing as engine "flush" (bahaah).

Don't do it

My wife let a dealer talk her into doing it to her mini-van a few years back and the CEL light came on within 2Kmiles of the service. The car started to run like crap and wouldn't even idle without stalling out. My brother in who is a mechanic, checked the van out and noticed sludge and other buildup in heads. We cleaned it up as good as we could, changed the oil 3 times and reset the CEL light. Once the van seemed to be running smoother I brought it in to the dealer and traded it in for a new vehicle. Since the van looked brand new and only had 40K miles on it the dealer never even test drove it and gave me a great trade in price for it.

My dealer uses BG products throughout

at 74K on my '98, I did the BG engine flush due to a negligent brother, and when that was done the service advisor took me out back and showed me how much buildup was removed and how it was "pitch black", so I'd recommend it, cost $89 at the time I did it but worth it, also recently did the BG Fuel Induction service, the diff. is night and day

I'd recommend both services for neglected cars
