5ht gen tie bar problem...Matt93SE step inside please

Matt,
First of all the 5th gen lower tie bar looks great...nice job.
But, I do have a (major) problem:

I put the car up on stands and did "step 5" (from your instructions)...Then I went to fit the end of the tie bar on the control arm end. One problem. The control arm nut does not fit into the collar of the tie bar.

In your instructions you say to remove the washer you won't need it, etc...the problem is that, at least on my 2k maxima, there is no washer. The nut itself is flared out wider and is way too wide to fit into the tie bar collar.

Perhaps its a diff kind of nut on the 5.5th gen (which year did you use to fit the 5-th gen bar?)

Anyways, you can see my issue here. Any suggestions on what to do? Here's some pics:

You can see that the nut is bigger than the collar on your tie bar:

Any other 5th genners have this problem when you put the bar on?

GRRRRR way to go, Nissan! Changing freaking parts around on us again!!

After a bit of research, they used those nuts like you have from production dates 4-99 to 6-01. It is P/N 554588-2Y001.

ALL other FWD Nissans with the same type of suspension (Altima, Stanza, Maxima, Quest, even the Axxess) use the same nut! P/N 01223-00121. Why nissan used them on that particular year and only that year is a mystery to me.

Here's a shot of FAST's part number index:
3rd Gen: http://www.mattblehm.com/HSS_images/..._diagram_4.jpg
4th gen: http://www.mattblehm.com/HSS_images/..._diagram_3.jpg
5th Gen: http://www.mattblehm.com/HSS_images/..._diagram_2.jpg

This problem was completely unforseen by me, as ALL of the Maximas that I've test-fit these bars on were ones that used the 00121 part. The 5th gens I worked on were two 2001 models and a 2003. I've never even seen a car with that particular nut on it!

I apologize for the problems, but that's just an oddball issue from nissan- yet another cost-cutting measure I'm sure.

Now, what you want is a solution:

The "Pin Link" part that the nut bolts onto (image here) is the same for all 5th gens, so there will be no problem in using the 00121 nut that all of the other Maximas are using. (part number 01223-00121).

They're listed at $3.28 each from www.nissanparts.cc and they show to have them in stock. Your local dealer might have them as well.

Again, I apologize for the problems and I know it's frustrating, but that one came out of left field for me.

hey no problem, thanks for the response! I'll hit the local dealer on Monday and pick em up....The part number is what I was hoping for and you found it faster than I could have! Not a big deal at all, I figured it must have been different on the 5th gens you tested it on...another Nissan quirk....

anyways, can't wait to put it on...the powdercoat job looks perfect, btw...

yeah, strange stuff.

I ran the oddball part # through another search and it mentioned something about a rear suspension locknut... so I'm thinking it was used for something else on the rear of the 5th gen as well as the front... ahh well. at least it's a simple problem to fix.

Hi Matt, I'm the one who was wondering if my headers were going to get in the way. Anyways I have not put the bar on yet but I did hold it up to where it is supposed to go and it looks as if it will have enough clearance to fit under the hotshot headers. Bar looks great, thanx much.

Good stuff! I know it won't fit the cattman 4th gen headers, but the precats on the 5th gen are below the car- not above it. I had to design the bar to fit around the precat on the bottom, so there was tons of extra clearance built into it. (of course, the first car I built one on had a WSP y pipe on it with no precats.. I had to completely rebuild the entire tie bar once I tried to fit it on a car with stock eaxhaust! )

Wasnt there a recall on the 02 models and some 01s even for the front control arms ? Maybe thats why the nuts are diff on yours cause you have the one before the recall ?? I know mine uses the same bolts as yours, so I will need them new bolts on mine also.

sweet, good stuff to know... I haven't ordered mine yet, haven't ordered any mods yet (might be buying a PR CAI soon, though my stock intake is working well enough so maybe I'll just buy this instead if irish44j reports good results)

I would just grind the flare off the nut. I don't think that would hurt anything.

Sure.. you'll spend 45 minutes grinding and possibly ruining the nut, when you could have just spent $6 at the dealer and had the proper ones that fit, NEW.
hmmmmm

and...the nissanparts guys only have 1 of them. ****! This is getting frustrating, I even visited a huge steel products warehouse today - they have 25 lb nuts for giant dump trucks - but not one with the right thread for the f-ing maxima....

well, tomorrow I am breaking out the grinder. I managed to get one spare nut (same as the ones I have) at a junkyard today so I'll have one spare in case I screw it up I guess......

stupid Nissan, wtf!!!!

WTF dude?!
I have half a dozen of them in a box in the garage.. used, but I have some.. I didn't figure it would be that hard to get.. maybe I'll pick up a pile of them from the junkyard next time I go...

I actually went to the junkyard and found 3 2000 maximas - all of which had the same nut that mine did....Yeah at the dealer I made the guy search for control arm nuts for maximas, quests, altimas and all the other FWD cars with no luck. Blows my mind that Nissan would not carry things like that in stock at a dealer....

well, I ground the nuts down today. They came out fine, fit in there fine, no damage to threads, they go on smooth....but I do have another issue (another thread on it bc for some reason I couldn't find this thread until now)....

but, I still can't WAIT to get the thing on there....matt, I'm not blaming you for any of this, btw - no way you could know about the alternate nuts and no way you could know it's so hard to get the other ones......
