WeaponR intake installed - impressions 4u
WeaponR intake installed - impressions 4u
First of all, I have to admit being one of the people on this org that is now a member of the " I told you so " club.
To all the guys that said just do the GAB...you were correct.
Second of all, the Dragon intake looks pretty cool, and it sounds pretty cool, but it aint worth the money otherwise.
Some observations worth noting.
1. The intake section is EXACTLY the same as the BERK, only it has "WeaponR" engraved on the side. It also had burrs on the ends and on the hole on the inside for the PCV connection.
2. The silicone hose connectors are pretty nice and work well.
3. The clamps are OK..not super high quality but decent, stainless stuff.
4. The fancy filter is pretty interesting. If you take it apart, there is a weird, injection molded base for the filter that has a radiused opening similar to the Stillen or the base in the high flow S&B filters. The only problem is this injection molded part has all sorts of plastic flash and rough edges on it. I'm picky about this kind of crap so I filed all of the protruding edges smooth. Seems silly to make a fancy, high flow design and mold it with flow killing, mismatched molds. It also features airflow stabilizing fins that stick up into the filter. They had the majority of the casting flash that needed smoothing.
5. The MAF adapter is a blank piece that you have to drill for your MAF on your own. You need to do this carefully so as not to cause yet another mismatch with the MAF opening. Mine came out perfectly centered, but I was very careful.
In summary, it's kind a fun to drive around and punch it next to Hondas and on the highway. The car wails when the throttle is at the proper position, and it sounds really cool. The car actually felt slower for the first ten minutes I drove it around, but it started feeling much better a short time after that.
I did not perform a reset on the ECU, but I might give that a shot some day.
I'll probably take some pics for anyone that is interested. It's not much different than the Frankencar or Berk, except for the filter and the silicone bands.

I'll save you the trouble of posting pics. I recently switched to the injen because I got tired of seeing the SES light and pulling off the negative lead on the battery to reset the ECU. I think the new MAF I installed had soemthing to do with the SES also. But the WeaponR was pretty cool looking and sounded nice. As you can see below I had the apexi setup from Frankencar. I wasn't thrilled about the foam filter so I decided to switch. I figured i'd use the dragon for show and the apexi for normal driving. It was cool, but now I got an injen. No SES light!

Thanks for the pics, although I have a 2002 which looks a bit different and my MAF is the OEM unit.
I don't see any problem with the filter. I think it's fine and I will check the TB and MAF in a few months for anything unusual.
I wouldn't let that filter test article that was recently posted freak anyone out too much either. This is not the same filter as the one in the test, even though it is also foam.
If I see anything too alarming, I'm going to try one of those K&N pre-filters on it.
I'll post more info periodically to the org regarding this setup.

I'm installing the weapon-R on a 2000 maxima and have run into a couple issues. The fitment seems sort of awkward, and that very first 2.5 - 3" adapter has to sit a little offset for everything to fit in the little battery area. I did get it in there, it's just the clamp on the 3" side sits a little strange... Assuming thats just how it's supposed to be, the directions imply a 4mm hose should be connected to the "air resonator box". I thought this setup was supposed eliminate the entire airbox right up to the throttle body??? The Weapon-R intake pipe has two large male adapters for hoses, I assume one go's to the valve cover. It was very difficult to get the hose onto the weapon-R intake pipe...but i got it on and connected that to the valve cover. What attaches to the second large male adapter? It's weird if i put this setup together without the weapon-r pipe....just the resonator box and the maf housing + weapon-r filter it seems to fit perfectly. With the intake pipe and without the resonator it sits awkward and there is a house with no home, and a large male adapter on the weapon-r intake pipe that I can't find a hose for. Anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong here? I can take pictures if needed.
And look at that... an old Cattman Ti-bar! Lucky SOB. Wish I had bought one of those way back when.
Exactly, take the resurrection for what it's worth. I too like the simple and clever design (beats the current Stillen or JWT), and am with you on the strut bar.
Left-2-right:
- Throttle-body
- Coupler
- Mid-pipe
- Coupler
- MAF housing
- Adapter plate
- Coupler
- Adapter plate
- Pop-charger
- ...profit.
...that you could have bought from knight_yyz for less money and better quality.
Live and learn.

On picture 1 you can see the red arrow points to the two items I repositioned so I could remove the OEM scoop. I placed the air temp sensor right near the new air filter, the other item I just ziptied in a handy spot. The dark blue arrows point toward the hose which go's from valve cover to intake pipe. Light blue points towards the small hose connecting the vacuum lines to the intake pipe. Pink on the left points to a hose that used to connect to the air resonator box but now has no home, and there is no male end on the intake pipe to receive it. I'm considering buying a hose that will connect this to the large male end that has no hose attached (also marked with a pink arrow) on the intake pipe using some sort of adapter to mate the two together.
Picture two you can see where the old hoses connected to the resonator. You can clearly see it had 3 different size hoses attached, yet the new pipe has two male adapters of equal size, and the small male adapter.
Picture 3 you can see the old 4mm hose, I'm embarrassed to say I'm a little stumped here i know one end attached to the intake area where i have a light blue arrow in picture 1, and another end attached to the intake resonator...I can't remember for the life of me where that third end attached to.

I went for a test drive exactly as you see picture 1, only I taped the unused large male adapter on the intake pipe shut temporarily. Other then the fact it won't idle the car runs perfectly. If you keep tapping the gas at the right moment it will idle for a while at 650rpms then die down, tap it, it will idle for awhile then die down etc etc....
So right now i just need to figure out if the idle speed needs to be adapted/allowed to adapt on it's own. If I should take that one exposed line with the with the pink arrow on the left and run it into the larger open male fitting on the intake pipe. Also if anyone might off hand know where that third end of the 4mm hose went on the original setup (just want to make sure I don't have something sitting open allowing a vacuum leak).
Also there is no ses light showing and no pending code in the system.
Hopefully someone with 5.0 gen SRI knowledge can answer your specifics... because the 5.5 gen only has the one VC hose. I don't know what that 3rd vacuum connection is for, because I only see the 2 in that 7 year old photo at the top of the thread. And with regards to it being crowded, it sure looks like the Weapon-R mid-pipe is curved, so that your setup can't extend all the way to the fender between the strut tower and the battery. Is that right? Does the mid-pipe have a bend in it? That seems really odd.
Good luck. Good pictures. That was a better post.
The more I study these pictures... you have 3 vacuum hoses that are 3 different sizes, and 3 vacuum leads on the mid-pipe that are only 2 different sizes. Is that the crux of your problem? As for fitment, can you rotate the mid-pipe 180 degrees?
Someone with a 5.0 gen and a SRI really needs to answer your questions. It really shouldn't be that difficult.

Since that picture was taken I installed the bracket that supports the air cleaner end of the setup.
I'm almost leaning towards they sent me the wrong pipe but stuffed the correct instructions into the box
I took the air intake off awhile back and cleaned everything out. When I put it back together I noticed the Absolute Pressure Sensor had nothing going to it. I found the transfer case vent tube and figured that must be it and attached it. I remember thinking it didn't seem right because it was sloppy. Well....apparently that 3rd end of the 4mm hose I couldn't figure out go's to that sensor and hasn't been plugged in correctly since before we bought the car. I attached that all together and the car so far is idling fine again...so that just leaves that one mid size tube I need to route into the intake.
He couldn't start a new thread so he chose to bump and old one so he could get some help. He also was asking for help with a problem, not whether or not anyone else likes the intake.
