i had an o2 go @ 36k. there is a tsb for this failure. i got code P0140 and had nissan replace both secondary o2 sensors along with an ecu flash under my extended warranty with no deductible. you can view the TSB at that link.

My rear 02's went out at 28k miles and were replaced under warranty per TSB NTB02-051a. It was not normal for my first two Maxes but it seems normal for the later models.

I had them go on my '01 AE at 26k, replaced by the dealership at no cost and I haven't had a problem with them since

It is not the 02-sensors going bad guys, it's the ECU software monitoring your aging catalytic convertor tolerance being too tight.

They're just replacing the 02-sensors as a *COVER*, since they are not covered under the 70K-80K emissions warranty, but the ECU is. So, since most people are past 3yr/36K bumper-to-bumper when this happens, they figure they'll at least get $200 for new 02s plus $100 or so in diagnostic and reprogramming fees.

I got P0138.
And I am out of 3yr/36k Warranty.
In addition, my Pre-owned+plus extend warranty doesn't cover emission system.
Therefore, Stealer will charge me for sure.
If I just replace the bank1 rear O2 sensor by myselfand disconnect the battery to reset the ECU, will this solve my problem?

I just had the SES light come on and stopped in at AutoZone and got the P0139 message on my '02. Unfortunately it is already over 60k miles. IceY2K1, is there any way to prove that its the ECU software and not the O2 sensor? The light actually came on over a week ago, turned off after like 3 days, then came back on about 3 days after that. Is it essential that I get this replaced soon?

Emissions Problems

I have a 2000 SE, but unfortunatly I got hit with the P0420 at 90K Miles. However, in California the Emissions Warranty is 80,000 (I believe by law). It is possibly lower in other states, but I'd double check. They should replace this as it has a longer warranty time than your regular bumper to bumper.

My problem was the Bank 1 (Rear) PreCat and list was $609. I thankfully went to (I hope this is ok to advert them), http://www.DirectNissanParts.com and got it for 25% off List (after I called for the part (and yes they are a Nissan dealership)). I had to give the car to a friend to install as I am buried lately, but he installed it in less time than Nissan was going to bill me for and does not charge $100/hr.

Sorry, I digress. Check the Emissions warranty as it should still be in force.

Colonel recently posted a thread on this where he was FORCED to purchase two new 02s before the dealer would perform the TSB reflash of the ECU software. So, he bought two new OEM 02s(don't get generic MUST be OEM) for a discount price through DAVEB and installed them himself. Then he went to the dealer with his reciept for the 02s in-hand and they performed the reflash. However, I think they still stuck him with a diagnostic fee for clearing the SES or something. By law if you are still under Emissions' Warranty(check owners' manual) they CAN NOT charge you for ECU reflash labor.

So, you can purchase and replacing two half used/perfectly fine 02s yourself.....OR....take an even bigger shot in the A$$ and let the dealer do it for you.

Honestly, there's no way I can see around Nissans' SHADY borderline illegal tactics besides having a TechnoSquare reflash with the latest TSBs included for $495 to kill two birds with one stone(if available).

Replace the 02s, clear the code, and see if it comes back.

If it does, it is telling you the CAT is not performing to the ECUs standard, however the way the ECU monitors the CAT performance is by measuring the front vs. rear 02 sensor.

Two ways:
1)Call a dealer and have them run your VIN#
or
2)Some OBD scanners can tell you
