do the 5sp max's have bad highway mileage compared to the auto's or other cars???
thats what i am experiencing...
i want to know if its just my car
cuz when i drive in the city, the car has pretty good fuel economy, but once i get on the highway, the fuel level just drops like crazy and i drive at normal speeds, 100-120km/h(60-75mph)

i don't know. i seem to get pretty poor mileage all around. My Max gets between 180-200 miles per fillup in the city, and between 300-350 miles per fillup on the highway.

it's not all bad, but it's way far from the commercials claim where they say you get 500 miles per fillup! I guess they drove the car until there was a pint of fuel left in the tank?

200 miles a tank? I hope you're filling it up at the half way point. The light comes on at about 14 gallons which is quite silly for an 18.5 gallon tank. I usually go about sixty miles after the light comes on. I get about 21mpg in San Diego (suburban) driving.
I got really close to the 500 mile figure once (480) but to do that you have to set the cruise at 70mph and run the tank almost dry.

Once I parked my car at a steep sideways angle when the tank was really low and when I started it stalled out after about 30 seconds. I had to push it to a level spot to get it to start

Mine does pretty well...actually does close to what the EPA estimate is. I consistently get 23mpg mainly city, and 28mpg highway. The Max has an 18.5 gallon tank, so on a full tank if I got on the road and drove only on the highway (28mpg x 18.5gal = 518 miles). The commercial was also using the auto GLE which get slightly better highway mileage, but as you can see the 5 speed isn't far off. If you are getting much worse than me you may want to consider changing some driving habits or getting your car checked out b/c something isn't right.

no, i never let my tank run dry! i heard the rust that builds up in there could get into the fuel lines, and into the engine! I always fill up at 3/4 of a tank, for the fear of the rust getting into the fuel line, and the fear of running out of gas!

what really pisses me off about this car is that it seems like i lose a gallon every time i put the key in the ignition. it really gets to me to see the needle move everytime i start the friggin engine.

i don't drive too hard, only when slow *** drivers pisses me off and stay in the passing lane! aaargh! but otherwise, i am a pretty conservative driver!

you probably do lose a gallon every time you drive the car, if you drive anywhere between 15-20 miles each time you drive you are burning a gallon! You are getting terrible mileage for the first 10 minutes the car is running. If you make alot of short trips that would easily explain why the mileage is so low.

mileage

I get around 260-290 with an auto SE in highway (I-95) driving using the Sunoco 94 octane. I drive fast, usually cruise at 70-80.
